About the role
Balfour Beatty is proud to be at the forefront of delivering HS2, the UK’s flagship high-speed rail project that will transform connectivity and drive economic growth across the country. As part of this once-in-a-generation programme, we are seeking a talented Temporary Works Design Engineer to join our team in Birmingham, supporting the delivery of our Headhouse project —an essential and technically complex structure that plays a critical role in the operation and functionality of the new HS2 station.
This role offers the opportunity to work on a high-profile, multidisciplinary project where engineering excellence, innovation, and collaboration are central to success. You will be involved in developing safe, efficient, and buildable temporary works solutions that enable the construction of permanent structures in a challenging urban environment. Working alongside experienced engineers, site teams, and designers, you will contribute to solving complex engineering challenges while ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance are maintained.
What you'll be doing
As a Temporary Design Engineer you will:
* Design and coordinate temporary works solutions in accordance with project requirements and relevant standards
* Produce and review design calculations, drawings, and technical documentation
* Collaborate closely with site teams, permanent works designers, and subcontractors
* Ensure all temporary works designs are safe, practical, and compliant with BS5975
* Support the Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) in managing the temporary works process
* Attend design and site meetings, providing technical input and guidance
* Contribute to risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
Who we're looking for
You will have the following:
* Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
* Experience in temporary works design within major infrastructure or construction projects
* Strong understanding of BS5975 and temporary works procedures
* Proficiency in relevant design software and engineering analysis tools
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills
* Working towards or holding professional accreditation (e.g. ICE or IStructE) is desirable
