Overview
Young Person’s Advisor (YPA) – Full‑time, temporary 12‑month posting within the Unaccompanied Asylum‑Seeking Children’s Team (UASC Team) at Durham County Council.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide specialist support, care and guidance to unaccompanied asylum‑seeking young people aged 16‑25 who are care leavers and children looked after.
* Work closely with agencies such as the Home Office, housing, adult services, education and training providers to safeguard and support each young person’s goals.
* Hold case responsibility, complete Pathway Needs Assessments and develop individual plans for education, training, employment and financial independence.
* Organise and record visits, capturing young people’s views, concerns and progress of their plans.
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of the asylum process and its potential outcomes to provide accurate advice.
Qualifications & Experience
* Level 3 qualification in a relevant children’s services field or equivalent.
* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* Significant direct experience working with young people (teenagers) in social care, health, education, housing or community settings.
* Capacity to build positive, effective relationships with young people.
* Person‑centred, non‑discriminatory approach to service delivery.
Benefits
The role offers a competitive salary within the Grade 8 band (£32,597 – £36,363) plus a generous annual leave entitlement of 27 days, rising to 32 days after five years of continuous service. You will be a member of the local government pension scheme. Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid options, are available.
