Overview

The post is offered as full-time with no on call under the co-supervision of Mr Girish Vajramani. You will gain experience in all aspects of surgery but will support primarily with functional neurosurgery, including Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) devices and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). During this year you will often be working at consultant level, running lists and clinics independently as well as under supervision, supporting a transition from trainee to fully independent consultant practice. Study leave will be granted to allow attendance at courses pertinent to Functional Neurosurgery; local courses are available for enhancing leadership, teaching and interview skills in preparation for consultant appointment. Audit and research activities in the department will be encouraged.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. This is a fixed-term contract commencing in December 2025 for 12 months. Our department is the only tertiary centre in the region covering acute and elective services with a catchment area of 3 million people across south and southwest England. You will be covering neurosurgery services as well as neurosciences wards and will be exposed to all aspects of neurosurgery. There will be ample educational opportunities including theatre attendance, weekly teaching, monthly morbidity and mortality meetings, clinics and MDTs, and broad experience in functional neurosurgery. Southampton is an attractive place to live and work on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust-appointed (non-training fellow) doctors and dentists.


Responsibilities

* Cover neurosurgery services and neurosciences wards; gain exposure to all aspects of neurosurgery.
* Support primarily with functional neurosurgery, including Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) devices and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).
* Work at consultant level, running lists and clinics independently as well as under supervision.
* Engage in educational activities, theatre attendance, teaching, and participation in morbidity and mortality meetings, clinics and MDTs.
* Participate in audit and research activities within the department.


Qualifications and Requirements

* Educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors; a named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the post.
* Continued Professional Development (CPD) is supported and encouraged; options are available to take study leave.
* All licensed doctors must meet GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal.
* Grading for Trust-appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid at a basic salary level (nodal pay point) as set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular; salary details are provided below and may include additional remuneration for hours as per the doctors’ work schedule (e.g., additional hours, weekend allowances, enhanced pay).
* Salary bands: MT04 £65,048; MT05 £73,992; salary will be assessed based on experience and skills.
* Eligibility for appointment includes a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training, holding a relevant higher specialty exam (e.g., FRCP, FRCA, FRCS), and a portfolio of evidence demonstrating progression criteria comparable to deanery trainees.
* GMC registration (with license to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential; applicants may need sponsorship according to Home Office criteria.
