We are seeking to appoint a locum consultant vascular surgeon. The candidate would be expected to be competent in a comprehensive range of traditional open and endovascular surgical procedures. The proficiency in endovascular skills will be highly valued. They will join an established vascular network of three hospitals (Bedford, Luton and Milton Keynes) with a total population of a million. The network operates a hub and spoke model with Bedford being the hub of all planned and emergency arterial activity at present. There are advanced plans to move the arterial hub to Luton and Dunstable Hospital in 2025. We are a recognised centre for complex arterial surgery in East of England.
This post is to fill an existing vacancy. The post holder will join an 8-member senior core vascular team which aims to provide a high quality, timely and modern service to patients with vascular disease. The core purpose of the vascular team is to continually work to improve quality of care and patient experience and find innovative solutions to common problems.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to practice within the normal working practices of the unit, follow the care pathways adopted by the vascular team, and work collaboratively for the benefit of patients and be prepared to be accountable for the quality of their work, behaviour and conduct. The appointee will work in accordance with the values of the Trust and Standard Operating Procedures of the vascular team.
The consultant will have a responsibility for the care of the patients even when not on call, engaging in, formal and informal discussions around the care of the patients and ensuring a detailed, written handover as appropriate. They will provide prompt help and/or opinion on request from another colleague, whether vascular or from other specialty. The post holder will subscribe to, and live the Trust Values of Teamwork, Honesty and Openness, Respect, Inclusivity, Valuing People and Excellence in all communications and conduct.
They will be required to attend the weekly vascular MDT and Vascular Grand Round where all major cases are discussed.
The appointee will be required to participate in the vascular emergency rota at the hub (1:8 basis – weekends).
The appointee will be required to support the straight-to-test model triaging process as well as Advice and Guidance process.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Medical Degree
2. MRCS, FRCS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
3. MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
Registration
Essential criteria
4. Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
5. •Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) CESR - portfolio pathway (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
6. Excellent all round experience of DGH work
7. Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
8. Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision

9. Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD
10. Experience of guideline appraisal
