Job Overview

The Senior Ophthalmic Technician post will have a focus on coordination and leading the ophthalmic technicians and supporting technicians skills training and development.

They will be expected to work alongside other senior ophthalmic technician, co-ordinating the shift and the technicians’ skills assignments. Ensure smooth clinic and patients flow within the department.

Participate and co-ordinate actively on ophthalmic technicians training to ensure and maintain competence. Provide effective, evidence based general and specific care for ophthalmic patients attending ophthalmology outpatients.

The Senior Ophthalmic Technician will be equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours relevant to employment and will act in accordance with the “Moorfields Way”.

To Support qualified nursing staff in providing high quality individualised care to a defined group of patients, relatives and carers. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of patients and colleagues and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centred care principles.

The post holder will continue to develop and undertake a range of delegated tasks, identified through service needs appropriate to the role.

The post holder is also expected to rotate to Purley site.

Main duties of the job

CLINICAL


* Lead on Ophthalmic Technicians skills training to ensure competence.
* Ensure safe and efficient running of hydroxychloroquine clinic at Croydon / Purley.
* Deliver clinical and therapeutic care to ophthalmic patients as required within set protocols within the scope of the role.
* Perform assessment when appropriate, plan and deliver high standards of care.
* Provide compassionate, safe and effective care and support to patients in a range of care settings.
* Develop, implement and evaluate individual care pathways, using models, protocols, practical and theoretical knowledge under appropriate delegation from a registered nurse.
* Support patients to improve and maintain their mental, physical, behavioural health and well-being

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

CLINICAL

* Lead on Ophthalmic Technicians skills training to ensure competence.
* Ensure safe and efficient running of hydroxychloroquine clinic at Croydon / Purley.
* Deliver clinical and therapeutic care to ophthalmic patients as required within set protocols within the scope of the role.
* Perform assessment when appropriate, plan and deliver high standards of care.
* Provide compassionate, safe and effective care and support to patients in a range of care settings.
* Develop, implement and evaluate individual care pathways, using models, protocols, practical and theoretical knowledge under appropriate delegation from a registered nurse.
* Support patients to improve and maintain their mental, physical, behavioural health and well-being.
* Care for a patient’s nursing needs whilst promoting comfort and well-being, ensuring their personal and social needs are met.
* The post holder will be expected to continue and maintain clinical skills such as assisting in minor ops, intravitreal injection and emergency treatments in acute eye service. Undertake and perform clinical skills to enhance the delivery of patient care, measure and record specific ophthalmic vital signs such as Visual Acuity, Visual Fields, OCT including dilatation of pupils by administering eye drops and measurement of intra ocular pressure using various methods. Taking and recording of vital signs such as Blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration and blood glucose measurement..
* Prioritise and manage own workload, recognising where elements of care can safely be delegated to other colleagues, carers and family members.
* Provide and receive sensitive information concerning a patient’s medical condition.
* Work collaboratively with other MDT members and engage with agencies and community teams to ensure a safe, individualised approach to the admission and discharge of patients.
* Coordinate and undertake the safe admission, transfer and discharge of patients in accordance with the Trust policies. Perform effective and timely discharge when delegated by a registered nurse.
* Maintain accurate, contemporaneous patient records in line with Trust policy and the NMC Code.
* Undertake and perform clinical skills to enhance the delivery of patient care to include ophthalmic vital signs such as visual acuity, visual fields and OCT’s.
* Prepare patient for and assist with the specific clinical procedures appropriate to each clinical areas e.g. intravitreal injection.
* Measure, monitor and record the following vital signs: Temperature, Blood pressure, Pulse, Respiration and blood glucose level. Report adverse signs to the Registered Nurse.
* Administer medications within remit as agreed by local policy for specific client groups.
* Be responsible for and demonstrate competence utilising mechanical devices. Perform equipment and alarm checks. Report faulty equipment to appropriate department for repair or replacement.
* To contribute to undertaking audit and to participate in research where appropriate.
* Assist administration as necessary to promote a consistent approach to care delivery of the highest standard i.e. monitoring stock levels, preparing clinic rooms and patient records, relevant forms & charts, communicating messages and obtaining results.
* Use IT systems for e.g. data collection, patient records, information and treatment investigative requests. – respecting confidentiality at all times.
* Assist and support patients in gaining access to and in the use of appropriate toilet facilities.
* To act as chaperone when required

COMMUNICATION

* Communicate effectively with dignity and respect to all patients, relatives and others giving consideration to potential barriers to understanding.
* Communicate effectively with colleagues, providing clear verbal, digital or written information and instructions when sharing information, delegating or handing over responsibility for care.
* Recognise and report any situations, behaviours or errors that could result in poor care outcomes.
* Report accidents, incidents, near misses or complaints following Trust policies / procedures.
* Contribute to a culture where all staff feels safe to raise their concerns [and that] speaking up about what are these is a normal part of their routine.
* To communicate effectively, respectfully and in a timely manner within the team.
* Understand the principle of confidentiality.
* Always communicate in a way that maintains the patient’s confidentiality.
* Maintain clear and legible patient records in accordance with both Trust and professional standards for record keeping.

MEDICINES MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

* Administer medicines (eye drops) covered by the PGD within the remit of practice.
* Comply with Trust policy in relation to safety on administration of medications.
* Manage and monitor the condition and health needs of patients within their care following administration of medication / eye drops.
* Recognise and report any situations, behaviours or errors that could result in poor care outcomes related to administration of medicine / eye drops.

Qualifications And Skills

Essential criteria

* Experienced Ophthalmic Technician at Band 3 and above

Desirable criteria

* Advanced skills as Ophthalmic techinician or willingness to learn

Knowledge and skills

Essential criteria

* Competent and able to troubleshoot basic skills (OCT, VF, VA etc..)
* Able to coordinate the team and communicate effectively

Skills And Experience

Essential criteria

* Flexible and able to adapt with the work conflicting demands

Desirable criteria

* Good understanding on how the unit and system works
