Salary: NHS Agenda for Change, Band 7: £47,810 - £54,710 (subject to change from April 2026)
Fixed-term appointment until 6th July 2027 (possibility of extension)

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a world leader in infectious disease research, and our Human Challenge Facility (HCF) plays a key role in accelerating the development of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics that improve global health. We are an expert team in Controlled Human Infection Models, working to advance clinical interventions for disadvantaged populations worldwide.
We are seeking a Senior Research Nurse to take on a leadership role within the HCF, overseeing the clinical operations and staff. The postholder will be instrumental in operationalising the facility for its first inpatient study, ensuring quality, integrity, and excellence in clinical trial delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic and Leadership Duties
1. Lead the day-to-day management of clinical activities within the HCF.
2. Oversee the clinical team and visiting staff, ensuring smooth operations.
3. Support the Clinical Operations Manager and deputise when required.
4. Implement processes to ensure high-quality research delivery aligned with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.
5. Act as a key point of contact between the research team, NHS, external agencies, and LSTM departments.
Clinical Responsibilities
6. Conduct research visits, clinical assessments, and procedures such as venepuncture, vital signs monitoring, and respiratory sampling.
7. Assist in research bronchoscopy procedures, ensuring safe patient care.
8. Administer treatments and investigational drugs in accordance with study protocols.
9. Ensure study-specific investigations are completed per protocol requirements.
10. Manage caseloads of study participants and ensure safety monitoring.
Research & Compliance
11. Manage a portfolio of clinical studies, ensuring adherence to protocols and regulatory frameworks.
12. Assist in obtaining informed consent, assessing participant eligibility, and ensuring study compliance.
13. Record and report adverse events, study deviations, and safety concerns appropriately.
14. Identify and implement strategies for participant recruitment and retention.
15. Ensure data collection is accurate, complete, and stored in compliance with regulatory standards.
Training & Development
16. Develop and deliver training for staff across clinical, laboratory, and trial management teams.
17. Support junior team members and ensure their professional development.
18. Maintain up-to-date clinical and research competencies, including mandatory training.
19. Engage in research-specific training and amendments to study protocols.
Administrative & Operational Duties
20. Develop and review study-specific documents and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
21. Maintain databases and accurate records of participant activity and financial tracking.
22. Oversee resource management, including medical supplies and consumables.
23. Coordinate recruitment events and public engagement initiatives to promote research participation
This role will require flexible working arrangements and may include out-of-hours working and night shifts.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:
Qualifications & Training:
24. Registered Nurse (Adult) with NMC registration (Essential)
25. Degree in a healthcare-related field
26. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification
27. BLS/ILS certification
Skills & Experience:
28. Experience leading and managing a clinical team
29. Significant experience in clinical research
30. Experience coordinating clinical trials, including regulatory compliance
31. Proficiency in venepuncture, IV cannulation, and clinical investigations
32. Strong project management and organisational skills
33. Experience in staff training and mentorship
34. Competency with MS Office and electronic data management tools
35. Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and night shifts, as required
