Organisation Team Solent Sharks Wheelchair Rugby Club Salary £9k Location Southampton Contract type Permanent (Part time) Closing date 3 April 2026 Job Description TEAM SOLENT SHARKS WHEELCHAIR RUGBY CLUB Head Coach
Team Solent Sharks is the only Wheelchair Rugby Club in Hampshire and our players come from as far away as Somerset and Sussex. We offer training and competition from anyone aged 12 and above who is physically disabled. In the last year we have entered a team in Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby’s Premiership (in the Paralympic discipline, 4s) and two teams in the Wheelchair Rugby 5s Leagues (5s is open to those who are a little less disabled than 4s players).
The Club is very popular and inclusive, with players young and old, male and female, and with many different disabilities represented in the club. The Club is based at Solent University Sports Complex in central Southampton and trains Tuesdays 6:30-8:30pm and Saturdays 11am-2pm. GB league matches take place around the country over a few weekends in the year.
We are looking to employ an enthusiastic Head Coach to oversee all aspects of training and competing and to work with the club’s committee to ensure the continued success of the club.
The Head Coach will be responsible for: setting achievable goals and planning and delivering effective coaching sessions; motivating all players; providing technical guidance and game plans; completing risk assessments and ensuring Health & Safety requirements are met; designing and running fitness regimes; supporting the club’s volunteers; and reviewing coaching sessions and competitive games.
We will consider employing a Head Coach with experience in another sport and would help the right person gain the necessary wheelchair rugby coaching qualifications. It would also be expected that the Head Coach would also be able to act as a referee and the club would support anyone needing to obtain a qualification in this.
We are offering the role as a self-employed one. We anticipate a coach undertaking approximately 320 hours of coaching each year, at weekends or in evenings, and are prepared to negotiate an hourly rate based on the specific skills and experience of the successful candidate. Travel and accommodation expenses will be paid.
If you have an interest and enthusiasm for wheelchair rugby, are good at communication, have the ability to inspire confidence and motivate players, have patience and good organisational skills, as well as being sensitive and supportive, enjoy working as part of team and working with disabled athletes, then we are keen to hear from you.
