As a member of the Pharmacy Technician team, you will provide safe and effective pharmacy support to the dispensary and adult wards within UHBW. You will develop your existing professional, technical and clinical skills through your own continuing professional development to provide and service of excellence to both patients and staff alike. This role includes a 4 day a week commitment to clinical ward facing work and 1 day a week embedded in the dispensary.


Main duties of the job

1. To develop, pilot and implement patient-focused pharmacy services to designated clinical areas in conjunction with clinical pharmacists and the dispensary team

2. To allow the development of clinical pharmacy services by ensuring appropriate skill mix of pharmacy staff

3. To liaise with patients and hospital staff at ward level to ensure smooth operation of the UHBW Patient Own Drugs and One-Stop Dispensing Schemes

4. To advise and counsel patients and carers to ensure that patients have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the appropriate use of their medicines to ensure concordance

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- To have a high responsibility for providing patient care for example ensuring medication doses are not omitted, medicines reconciliations are completed within 24 hours of admission and safe dispensing processes

- To follow Trust protocols, procedures & guidelines and work in line with legal requirements and GPhC standards for pharmacy professionals at all times.

Organisation and Planning:

- To be involved in the prioritisation of dispensary workload. To work with colleagues to ensure that appropriate cover is available during breaks/lunch periods and periods of staff shortage/short term absence

- To be involved in the prioritisation of ward rota. To work with colleagues to ensure that appropriate cover is available during periods of staff shortage/short term absence

- To support the planning and organisation of training needs of new staff, working with the Lead Technicians

- Prioritise individual daily tasks depending on workload, staffing and the needs of the service.

- To ensure all paperwork and systems are kept up to date, filed and efficiently maintained

Service Development and Research:

- To undertake regular assessment and audit of the service through quality standards and robust auditing methods

- To attend clinical audit training where needed

- To attend the Trust Quality Improvement programme to a minimum of bronze level and to actively participate in service improvement discussions


Person specification


Knowledge and experience

* Proven ability to dispense medicines accurately without errors
* Previous experience of supporting the training and teaching of others
* Previous experience of working within a clinical patient-facing environment
* Previous participation in audit or quality improvement work
* Proven recent hospital experience of delivering dispensing service as a technician


Qualifications

* Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
* Evidence of continuing professional development
* Accredited Medicines Management Technician (Essential within 12 months of appointment. Required for progression to band 5 alongside development pathway)
* Accredited Checking Technician (Essential within 12 months of appointment. Required for progression to band 5 alongside development pathway)
* Accredited for Assessing or Coaching

* Ability to work alone and in a team
* Committed to providing a high-quality pharmacy service.
* Skilled at using the internet and online information systems
