Senior Data Scientist

We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Data Scientist within our growing Technology, Data and Software Development (TDSD) Team at our Wallingford office to meet current business needs and future growth plans.
With a background in data science and machine learning across various data types and applications, you will work within project teams across disciplines such as climate resilience, flood modelling, ecology, and heritage. Projects may include creating predictive models, transforming large spatial datasets, and developing client-facing data visualisations. This is a technical role requiring team leadership, project management, and business development skills.
Main responsibilities:
* Data engineering and model development for environmental projects
* Developing internal tools to support flood modelling
* Managing client-facing and internal R&D projects
* Preparing technical documentation and reports
* Contributing to business development, including proposal writing
* Mentoring team members and supporting technical skills development
* Leading and managing team activities
Location:
Based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, OX10 9BS. We support flexible, agile working arrangements.
Qualifications and experience:
Key competencies:
Experience in client-focused environments, excellent report writing, and effective communication skills. A good understanding of mathematical and statistical principles and strong analytical problem-solving abilities.
Demonstrable skills:
* Curiosity and ability to identify wider applications of data science
* Leadership qualities and ability to work independently
* Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Core skills:
* Postgraduate degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or related field
* Post-qualification experience in data analysis and machine learning, preferably with geospatial data
* Experience with machine learning/deep learning techniques for various data types
* Project management experience
* Proficiency in Python, R, or similar scientific programming languages
Desirable skills:
* Willingness to mentor less experienced team members
* Knowledge of AI tools for image segmentation, object detection, and large language models
* Experience with geospatial data and GIS
* Line management experience
