We are looking for a self-motivated, innovative, enthusiastic and pro-active laboratory aide to work under the overall direction and supervision of the Laboratory Manager/s. You will be involved in the provision of general laboratory support including the preparation of stock solutions/ media, autoclaving, and assisting with stocktaking and ordering of supplies.
Working across two departments, you will support the Laboratory Manager/s in the provision of an effective and efficient support service to select groups of researchers and students
Duties and responsibilities
1. General laboratory administrative duties including ordering supplies.
2. Replenish stocks of consumables, stores of basic equipment, to ensure there are always adequate supplies available to meet work requirements.
3. Preparing stock solutions/media
4. Glass washing and replenishing
5. Autoclaving
6. Ensuring good laboratory practice is maintained – keeping work areas clean and tidy.
7. Identify problems or difficulties and communicating these to Laboratory Manager/s
8. Compliance with relevant Health & Safety procedures affecting self and others
9. Assisting the lab manager oversee safe disposal of hazardous chemicals.
10. Provide holiday cover in other areas in the departments
The successful candidate will have a good standard of education evidenced by up to 5 GCSEs (grade C and above) or equivalent, demonstrating numeracy and literacy. You will be IT literate, with knowledge of Microsoft packages including Excel, Word and Outlook and have good written and verbal communication skills.
Manual dexterity will be required and the ability to follow instruction and written protocols are an essential requirement. You will work in a planned and methodical way with minimal supervision and will be able to prioritize your workload effectively. You will need the ability to communicate confidently and effectively with University staff and students, and to work collaboratively, in order to build and sustain working relationships.
