Role Summary
As a Graphic Designer at University of Birmingham you will be an integral part of the Campus Services Marketing & Communications team. Your role will involve creating a variety of engaging online and offline design materials that contribute to our wide campaign portfolio. You will work collaboratively with fellow designers fostering joint upskilling, learning, and development opportunities.
Main Duties
* Produce visually appealing online and offline collateral to effectively support the objectives of all departments across Campus Services including, but not limited to, Conferences & Events, Edgbaston Park Hotel, Winterbourne House and Garden, Food Beverage and Retail, Facility Services, Security, Student Living, Day Nurseries, as well internal comms facing collateral.
* Work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects to create assets such as digital banners, email signatures, booklets/brochures, flyers, pull-up banners, websites, presentation templates, and more.
* Producing high quality, accurate final files to print and digital specifications, including checking proofs, archiving and filing to the server on a daily basis.
* Utilise your understanding of User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) principles to provide insights and recommendations aimed at improving the user journey across our materials.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure, where applicable, that your designs align with overarching University branding and objectives
* As a technical expert you will advise on all areas of design, including scoping projects, equipment, software and feeding into the review and enhancement production and working processes.
* Liaising with external parties, such as printers, to ensure that a project runs smoothly, and a client’s expectations are met
* Researching and reviewing market trends with regards to design
* Working with internal teams to measure the effectiveness of design work
* Support the wider marketing & communications team with other duties as and when required

* Supporting the University’s sustainability agenda through resource efficient working.
* Providing support for manager(s) in promoting sustainability across the University
* Supporting equality and values diversity, moderates own behaviour to avoid unfair discriminatory impact or bias on others.
* Any other duties as may reasonably be expected by the relevant manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
* Educated to A Level standard, or equivalent level 3 qualification such as a Level 3 NVQ, or level 3 national diploma or relevant work experience evidencing the skills and ability to undertake the role.
* Minimum of grade C/4 in Mathematics and English at GCSE or equivalent level 2 qualifications.
* Professional experience in a Communications, Events, Design and/or Marketing role
* Highly proficient IT skills, including the MS Office and website editing software. You should be confident and able to quickly learn new IT skills and software packages as required.
* Extensive practical experience using industry standard packages, including Adobe Creative Cloud, Aftereffects, InDesign Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Premier Pro, Acrobat and Presentation software, as well as Microsoft Office/PowerPoint to create, edit and post produce content and assets.
* A thorough understanding of graphic design, typography and digital standards
* An understanding of event CMS platforms is desirable
* A solid understanding of UX and UI principles, enabling you to offer informed recommendations for enhancing the user experience
* Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders across the University and externally
* A proactive approach to staying updated with design trends and industry advancements to ensure that your work remains fresh, innovative, and aligned with best practices
* An understanding of print and print specifications, proven ability to plan ahead and anticipate requirements, proactively planning own (and sometimes others’) workloads to manage time effectively, progress tasks concurrently and work to deadlines.
* Excellent interpersonal skills. You must inspire confidence and command authority with a range of colleagues and provide excellent customer service at all times.
* Ability to work effectively in a large, complex organisation, and to develop a good understanding of how the University and higher education institutions work.
* Ability to understand policy and procedures and how to apply these.
* Understands the importance of equality and diversity in the workplace.
Dimensions
This role will require the exercise of personal initiative within and beyond the department and with external contacts.
Planning and organising
The role is required to work independently on daily, weekly and monthly tasks but also on projects with medium-longer-term horizons without daily supervision. You will use your knowledge and experience to plan and deliver a number of design projects concurrently and effectively. Ability to work well under pressure and to deadlines and targets, with a flexible and adaptable approach to your work and working hours.
Problem solving and decision making
You will work with direction from your manager, but you will have a significant degree of autonomy. You will deal with more complex queries and be expected to resolve any problems in your area of responsibility. You will need to proactively recognise possible challenges and provide innovative solutions before they become an issue.
Internal and external relationships
You will liaise with internal colleagues and stakeholders University-wide and also with external stakeholders.
