Birchwell Associates are working with a leading organisation to recruit a skilled Data Centre Engineer for their Farnborough-based facility. This is a hands-on role within a secure, high-availability environment, supporting both private and public sector clients across industries such as finance, defence, IT security, and engineering.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining critical infrastructure, delivering technical support, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations within the data centre. This is a client-facing position, requiring strong technical ability alongside excellent communication and organisational skills.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor and manage the data centre environment (on-site and remotely), responding promptly to alerts and incidents.
Handle requests for change, tickets, and inbound support queries via the engineering service desk.
Install and maintain server racks, structured cabling, and associated hardware.
Provide responsive remote hands support for live client environments within agreed SLAs.
Manage cross-connect cabling and follow client patching requirements.
Support logistics tasks including handling deliveries, maintaining inventories, and general site operations.
Carry out ad hoc duties relevant to data centre activity.
Person Profile
Previous experience in a data centre environment with strong knowledge of infrastructure, cabling, and hardware installation.
Client-facing approach: personable, professional, and confident communicator.
Well-organised, motivated, and eager to develop new skills.
Understanding of accreditation/compliance processes.
Proficient IT skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality, client-focused service.
Desirable Skills
Familiarity with data centre operations and administration.
Knowledge of structured cabling systems.
Experience with call ticketing platforms.
Basic understanding of networking, switching, routing, and server technologies.
Awareness of electrical power standards relevant to IT environments.
Additional Information
Candidates must be able to pass high-level security vetting prior to employment.
Must live within 30 minutes of Farnborough and be available for a 1-in-3 on-call rota.
This position is 100% site-based.
