Our client, a large Aerospace and Defence supplier, is seeking a Materials & Process Laboratory Technician for a 6-month initial contract at their Stevenage site.
* Applicants must hold sole British nationality and be willing to obtain SC Clearance.
* Contract duration: 6 months.
* Pay rate: 40 p/h Umbrella, inside IR35.
* Location: Fully onsite in Stevenage, with some ad-hoc remote work.
Overview of Department:
The Materials team plays a crucial role in understanding material technologies, their applications, and manufacturing processes to ensure product quality, cost-effectiveness, and reliability.
The team is a federated UK/France/Italy/UK/Europe/US-based group within Mechanical Engineering, sharing processes and collaborating across the business. It possesses extensive testing facilities and specialized knowledge in various materials, including metallic, non-metallic, and composites.
The team provides:
* Technical guidance and approval for material selection, characterization, and use across projects.
* Consultancy services for the Government and MoD.
* Representation on international and national standards committees.
* Support for REACH and RoHS compliance.
* Failure investigations and forensic engineering support.
* Guidance on hazardous materials management.
* Solutions for obsolescence issues.
* Technical assessments of suppliers and processes.
* Support for in-country design and manufacturing activities.
* Quality assessment of purchased items.
Responsibilities:
This role involves assessing various materials, including metals, paints, adhesives, and composites. Familiarity with laboratory equipment is necessary; experience with XRF, FTIR, SEM, and EDX is advantageous but not mandatory. A solid background in materials chemistry is preferred.
Tasks include preparing reports, interpreting engineering drawings and specifications, and utilizing systems like Word, Excel, and Access. The role supports failure investigations, material selection, supply chain support, inspection reports, and compliance data generation (e.g., REACH, RoHS).
Required Skills and Experience:
* Experience working in manufacturing laboratories.
* Assessment of materials and components against international standards, including DEF STANs.
* Support in the selection, procurement, and manufacturing of engineering parts.
* Knowledge of non-metallic materials production and processing, including paints and adhesives.
