The Role
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) at the University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint an open-ended Lectureship in Liberal Arts. The appointment will support the launch of the University’s exciting new degree programmes in Liberal Arts which will welcome its first students in September 2026. On appointment the Lecturer will take on the role of Programme Director for Liberal Arts, a leadership and management position that will normally be held for 3-4 years. On completion of the Liberal Arts Programme Director role, the Lecturer will continue in the open-ended Lectureship in Liberal Arts.
The new degree programme is based in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures; however, as outlined below, it is interdisciplinary in approach. We thus welcome candidates with strong Liberal Arts experience and expertise whose core research and teaching interests align with those of SMLC and / or with those of any of our other three Schools: Critical Studies; Culture & Creative Arts, and Humanities. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring expertise in one or more of the following areas: Modern Languages, Comparative Literature, English Literature, Film & Television Studies, History, Philosophy or Theatre Studies.
Liberal Arts at Glasgow
Liberal Arts at Glasgow offers a new approach to the academic skills developed in the Arts and Humanities through a broad, flexible, and interdisciplinary degree structure. The University of Glasgow's undergraduate degrees offer considerable flexibility already, at Pre-Honours level (years 1 and 2). The Liberal Arts programme amplifies this flexibility by giving access to the wide range of options in subjects across the College of Arts and Humanities at Honours level, and encouraging interdisciplinary engagement across subjects. A unique feature of the programme is the opportunity for specialisation according to different subject pathways, allowing students to study Liberal Arts with (one of) Comparative Literature, English Literature, Film & Television Studies, History, Philosophy or Theatre Studies. Research, Teaching and Leadership
The University holds a leading place worldwide in the research and teaching of the Arts and Humanities. As above, the research specialisation of applicants should reflect one of the disciplines in the College of Arts and Humanities, including but not limited to those represented in SMLC (incl. Modern Languages and Comparative Literature). The postholder will be a member of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, although the nature of the programme is such that their work will involve coordination with other Schools and subjects across the College. It is expected that the postholder will assume the lead academic role for the programme as well leading teaching on the core courses. The programme’s first intake will be in September 2026 and the postholder will support students to construct a curriculum that aligns with their individual interests.
The successful applicant will undertake research of international excellence in their field and contribute to learning and teaching in Liberal Arts and to knowledge exchange activities relative to their research and teaching. They will also undertake administration and service activities in line with the strategic objectives of the School and of the College. Job Purpose
To undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline of Liberal Arts, contribute to learning and teaching on agreed programmes and undertake administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
* Develop and progress individual/joint research projects of international standard in the subject area with the support of a mentor, as required.
* Write up research findings/outcomes for publication in leading journals for dissemination as appropriate, identifying potential sources and contributing to funding applications as an individual or team member.
* Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications.
* Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses within the subject area in accordance with the subject’s priorities including accepting responsibilities as course coordinator for one or more courses.
* Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
* Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
* Contribute to the development of theory and practice in the subject area.
* Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and to contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.
* Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.
* Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
* Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
* To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.
For Appointment At Grade 8
* Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project managing research activities, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Securing external resources to support research individually and/or jointly, as appropriate to the subject area.
* Develop an expert reputation in the field by effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in leading journals and conferences, and where appropriate undertaking knowledge exchange activities.
* Make a substantial contribution to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College. Establishing and leading research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University, including multi-disciplinary links, and developing external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.
* Actively contribute to the effective management and administration of the College/School, assuming responsibility for the management of allocated resources and contributing to the wider organisation of the subject area.
* Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
* Develop effective approaches which enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field and support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
* Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem-based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
* Develop effective working relationships with students and early career staff in the subject specialism, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
* To supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students.
* Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.
* Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
* Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential:
* A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience in a similar or related role.
* A2 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline and of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area.
* A3 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University/sector/external (e.g. commercial) awareness.
* A4 Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.
For Appointment At Grade 8:
* A5 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in one of the areas represented by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (or any of the other Schools and subjects in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Glasgow) with a growing reputation for scholarship within the subject area.
* A6 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline to develop research and teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.

Salary will be Grade 7/8, £40,497 - £45,413 / £49,559 - £57,422 per annum.
