Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Medical Technologist

The closing date is 18 January 2026

An exciting opportunity has arisen to become part of a highly motivated, multidisciplinary team in the Adult Sleep Disorders Centre at Guy's Hospital. Sleep Disorders Medicine is a rapidly expanding specialist field and we are looking for healthcare scientists, Nurses or Allied Health Professionals who wish to begin or develop a career in Sleep Medicine. Graduates welcome.

We are a 10 bedded sleep unit performing sleep investigations for all sleep disorders including complex and specialist presentations. You will work in both in‑patient and out‑patient areas and you will be trained in all aspects of sleep diagnostic interpretation and interventions.

Main duties of the job

We have a large domiciliary service providing clinical screening and diagnostic services across London and the UK. The role will involve face‑to‑face and virtual clinics. Analysis of diagnostic data forms a core part of the role alongside managing care pathways for CPAP users. Therefore excellent IT and communication skills are essential.

Shift patterns are variable and include some evenings, weekends and rotation to night duties. Due to limitations in the location and nature of the role we are unable to support some shift patterns. Please enquire with us directly.

Transferable skills include previous experience with respiratory patients using non‑invasive ventilation (CPAP/APAP/Bi‑PAP) and/or ventilated patients, analysis of EEG/ECG or similar diagnostic data, unsupervised delivery of clinics in a related speciality and experience of data entry/analysis.

Performing consultations and delivering education to individuals or groups is also an important part of the role and the successful candidate should have a good understanding of OSA and its management.

We offer opportunities for personal and professional development.

Please see the Job Description and Person Specification for detailed information regarding the responsibilities and requirements for this post.

About us

Guy's and St Thomas' is among the UK's busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.

Guy's is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas' has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long‑term conditions.

Job responsibilities

This role requires an ability to work creatively and flexibly to deliver care across the service to our patient population. The post involves direct contact with patients to both educate and issue the appropriate equipment and evaluate adherence across long‑term use. This may be diagnostic or therapeutic devices, face‑to‑face or via a digital platform. Devices include diagnostic equipment for domiciliary sleep screening, CPAP units and consumables for an existing population of over 20,000 patients. The candidate must have a good knowledge of obstructive sleep apnoea and be able to demonstrate this at interview. They should also have excellent communication skills as providing comprehensive education and instruction to patients forms a significant part of this role. The post holder will also be expected to apply sleep monitoring equipment for in‑patient sleep investigations and analyse biophysiological data both live and recorded. Therefore attention to detail and strong IT skills are important.

During night shift the post holder will form part of a small team responsible for the patients admitted overnight. A degree of leadership is expected. One of the primary responsibilities after patient safety is the maintenance of signal quality and candidates will be expected to be able to perform a full bio‑calibration prior to the start of each study, re‑apply electrodes/sensors when necessary, document accurately any interventions or changes in standard protocol including the initiation of therapeutic devices if indicated. Full training will be delivered.
