Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse) – Band 5

* Commitment to a 52‑week full‑time programme with a 50/50 split between academic study and supervised practice within the Healthy Child Programme teams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Job Purpose:
To undertake the PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN – school nursing) training to develop the knowledge and skills required to function safely and effectively as a School Nurse and lead practice within the public health agenda through support, education and guidance of the Higher Education Institute, Practice Supervisor, Practice Assessor and Practice Lead.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Attend all educational sessions, submit assignments promptly and develop new skills and knowledge integrating theory and practice.
* Maintain close liaison with the Practice Assessor, agree a clinical learning programme, and identify and highlight any areas of concern regarding progress and development.
* Understand the wider determinants of health and seek to address health inequalities across diverse communities and populations.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individual/family focused programmes of care under the direction of the supervisor and assessor, working in partnership with other agencies (e.g., support services, social care, early years provision, schools) and maintain accurate professional records in line with Trust policy and NMC standards.
* Develop awareness and involvement in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme, becoming an autonomous practitioner within own limits of competency and confidence.
* Demonstrate increasing skills and knowledge in assessment and decision making concerning safeguarding concerns associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and respond appropriately in line with local safeguarding policy and inter‑agency procedures.
Communication
* Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with families and other professionals in a multi‑agency, integrated working environment.
* Report absence and sickness promptly to the University and follow local service processes.
* Arrange and attend regular clinical supervision with Practice Assessor and Practice Lead.
People Management
Maintain own professional development and engage in all academic and practice‑based assessments, adhering to the NMC Code, standards of proficiency and Trust values.
Clinical and Practice Governance
* Observe strict confidentiality regarding patient, family, staff and records, in line with the Data Protection Act.
* Ensure data handling complies with Trust Information Governance and Security policies.
* Adhere to Trust risk assessment and risk management processes.
* Adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
* Maintain current NMC registration and undertake mandatory training relevant to the role.
* Participate in clinical and safeguarding audits and regular supervision with the Practice Assessor.
* Participate in relevant emergency preparedness processes for the team.
General

Person specification
Qualifications & Training
* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration (Part 1 or Part 2 of the register).
* Practice Assessor qualification, or equivalent.
Experience
* Ability to work effectively with children, young people and families, delivering holistic, evidence‑based care that supports health, wellbeing and development.
* Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and in partnership with other agencies.
* Awareness of current legislation, national guidance and local policies relevant to the Healthy Child Programme.
* Ability to work independently.
Knowledge & Skills
* Good communication skills, including effective verbal, written and IT abilities.
* Understanding of health and safety guidelines, risk assessment and safe working practices.
* Demonstration of best practice promotion.
* Ability to prioritise and organise workload, balancing clinical responsibilities and academic commitments.
Safeguarding
* Awareness of the importance of safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults, and understanding of safeguarding issues.
* Knowledge of legislation and current events informing practice within health and community settings.
