Job Title: Electronics Technician
Location: Wiltshire, UK
Overview of the Role
A leading engineering and manufacturing organisation specialising in life-critical electronic and protection systems is seeking an experienced Electronics Technician to join its team in Melksham.
This hands-on role supports the build, test, calibration, and troubleshooting of advanced electronic systems used in safety-critical applications, including respiratory, underwater, and detection technologies. You will play a key role in ensuring that prototype and production hardware is reliable, compliant, and ready for use in demanding operational environments.
Working closely with Engineering and Manufacturing teams, you will assemble and rework electronic assemblies, PCBAs, and wiring looms, execute functional and environmental tests in line with established procedures and ESD controls, and help maintain laboratory and production test equipment to minimise downtime and maximise product quality.
You will also support issue triage, perform first-line diagnostics and repairs, and capture detailed failure data to drive continuous improvement across both new product introduction and sustaining activities.
Key Responsibilities
*
Assemble, test, and calibrate electronic assemblies and PCBAs used in safety-critical systems.
*
Troubleshoot and repair analogue and digital circuitry down to component level using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analysers, and other diagnostic tools.
*
Perform functional and environmental testing (e.g., vibration, temperature, EMI) in accordance with relevant industry and defence standards.
*
Support engineers with prototype builds, test fixture development, and verification activities during product development cycles.
*
Document test procedures, calibration records, failure analysis, and repair logs using ERP and quality management systems.
*
Investigate, diagnose, and repair returned products, clearly recording findings and corrective actions.
*
Identify and resolve production assembly and testability issues.
*
Maintain calibration records and ensure test equipment remains compliant and operational.
*
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within manufacturing and reliability testing processes.
*
Ensure strict adherence to IPC standards, ESD controls, and internal quality and safety procedures.
Essential Requirements
*
Minimum of 2–3 years’ hands-on experience in electronics assembly, testing, or troubleshooting, ideally within a regulated or safety-critical industry (e.g., defence, aerospace, medical devices).
*
Ability to interpret technical drawings, circuit schematics, and component datasheets.
*
Understanding of microcontroller-based systems, sensor interfaces, and low-power electronics.
*
Strong knowledge of ESD handling and control requirements.
*
Experience building prototype assemblies and supporting verification activities.
*
Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, production, and customer support teams.
*
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
*
Reliable and consistent execution of technical tasks, including routine or repetitive processes.
*
Willingness to be primarily based in Melksham, with occasional travel to other UK sites and infrequent customer or supplier visits (UK and international).
Desirable Experience
*
Associate degree (or equivalent) in Electronics Engineering Technology or a related discipline.
*
Experience working within regulated sectors such as defence, aerospace, or medical devices.
*
Strong knowledge of surface-mount and through-hole soldering techniques (IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 certification preferred).
*
Hands-on experience with cable and connector assembly to IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards.
*
Experience supporting development, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of complex electronic systems.
*
Familiarity with ERP and quality management systems.
Experience Profile
The ideal candidate will bring practical, real-world experience supporting electronic systems within a structured, quality-driven engineering environment, with particular emphasis on reliability, traceability, and compliance
