We have an exciting opportunity for a permanent Consultant Anaesthetist with a subspecialty interest in obstetric anaesthesia to join our team at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The successful applicant will join a cohesive, forward-thinking department of 32 Consultants to deliver elective and emergency care across inpatient theatres and the onsite Day Surgery Unit, including obstetrics. The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds has a reputation for friendliness and cooperation and an outstanding reputation for quality and training. In this role you will collaborate with the department and wider MDT to ensure comprehensive and coordinated high quality anaesthetic care, meeting the requirements of the Trust's objectives. For a full-time post, the job plan will be divided as: 7.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care including clinical activity in theatres, labour suite, high-risk obstetric clinics and other clinically related activity (delivered as 6 clinical sessions per week) 1.75 Programmed Activities as a 1:12 non-resident on-call, for predictable and unpredictable emergency work, covering both obstetric and general emergencies 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) - includes CPD, audit, teaching and research.
Responsibilities
* To contribute to meeting the Anaesthetic Directorate objectives. To provide a consultant-level anaesthetic service for elective and emergency services including obstetric anaesthesia.
* To provide high quality patient care, minimising risks and maintaining patient safety in accordance with the GMC's Good Medical Practice.
* To help in the delivery of effective services within the agreed budget.
* To co-operate with other departments and agencies to meet the objectives of the Anaesthetic Department.
* To accept to work flexibly within a nominally fixed timetable.
* To undertake appropriate projects and administration as required by the department.
* To provide leadership and health- management skills in the development of anaesthesia services.
* To supervise junior staff as appropriate.
* To maintain the Directorate principles of effective multi-disciplinary team working.
* To ensure personal knowledge of, and compliance with, Trust and departmental policy and protocols.
* To provide clinical services in line with the Trust's clinical governance arrangements, which are designed to ensure that agreed quality standards are achieved.
* To contribute to clinical governance within the department and as part of the MDT.
* To undertake audit of clinical practice within the department to ensure that current standards and evidence-based practice are applied.
* To help provide training, supervision and career development to junior doctors of all grades in the Anaesthetic Department and to Anaesthesia Associates.
* To contribute to the education of medical and nursing students, paramedics and trainees in other specialities as required.
* Take responsibility for CPD and engage in annual appraisal to identify personal development opportunities. Full utilisation of study leave is encouraged.
