Job summary
As a valued member of our in-house Legal Team, you'll take the lead in managing litigation cases from receipt to settlement. You'll also assist with matters notified by the Coroner and her Officers, and support other ad hoc legal issues that arise.
Your insight and attention to detail will help improve the experience for patients, clients, carers, and staff. Managing claims effectively will help identify areas for service improvement and record risk management recommendations and outcomes after each claim or inquest.
You will collaborate with colleagues across all levels and departments within the Trust, spanning our three main sites, and work closely with external organisations and stakeholders. Additionally, you'll have opportunities to contribute to staff training on claims management and inquests.
Main duties of the job
1. Analyze letters from solicitors or patients, identify key issues, review healthcare records, and assign a risk grading, reviewed throughout investigations.
2. Arrange disclosure of documents to Claimant's solicitors and ensure receipt of reports from relevant parties, disseminating information as needed.
3. Obtain reports from clinicians as requested by HM Coroner and his/her officers, including Postmortem reports, and liaise with staff for pre-inquest meetings.
4. Assist in other ad hoc legal matters, including Access to Health Records requests and general healthcare/legal enquiries.
5. Report all new claims to NHSR following current guidelines and obtain required reports and information.
6. Work as part of a team, offering support and flexibility, while also working independently.
7. Assess claims for reporting to NHSR, prepare preliminary analyses, including liability assessments, quantum estimates, and care chronology.

Qualifications
* Proven experience in claims and Inquest handling
* Experience in customer service or pressurised service delivery environments
* High-standard written communication skills
* Administrative experience
* Supportive team player with initiative
* Strong data analysis skills using tools like Excel
* Personal qualities: tenacity, tact, discretion, enthusiasm, compassion
* Relevant degree or professional qualifications
* Knowledge of health strategies, standards, NHS agenda, and legal system
* Experience with complaints procedures and clinical risk understanding
Communication
* Ability to communicate complex or contentious information clearly, both orally and in writing, including drafting letters, reports, and presentations
* Driving License
