Electric Motor Design & Development Engineer
Job Description
Employment Type: Full-time
Location: Hybrid (UK Midlands)
Reports to: CTO/Head of Design Organization
Overview
The Electric Motor Design and Development Engineer plays a key role in the design, analysis, and development of brushless and permanent magnet electric motors for aerospace propulsion applications. This role involves taking customer requirements and system‑level specifications through the complete development cycle—from concept and electromagnetic design to performance assessment, validation planning, and manufacturability support. Reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), this role will work within a multidisciplinary team of electronics, mechanical, and aerospace engineers, as well as procurement specialists. The position requires a strong mix of analytical ability, engineering rigor, and creativity.
Key Duties
System Design and Development
* Translate performance requirements and customer specifications into detailed motor design criteria.
* Develop electric motor architectures, including stator and rotor geometry, magnetic circuits, winding design, and thermal management concepts.
* Use SolidWorks, MATLAB/Simulink, and ANSYS Motor‑CAD/FEM tools for design, modeling, and simulation.
* Conduct trade‑off studies to optimize performance, efficiency, weight, and cost.
* Support the definition of design interfaces with other propulsion system components (ESC, cooling, mechanical integration).
Regulatory Compliance
* Apply IEC, ISO, and other relevant standards governing electrical machines, materials, and insulation systems.
* Ensure that product designs reflect appropriate safety, quality, and performance standards.
* Maintain awareness of aerospace and industrial regulatory environments, understanding how standards influence engineering design and verification requirements.
Innovation and Research
* Investigate new technologies, materials, and methods for improved motor performance and manufacturability.
* Support feasibility studies and R&D initiatives focused on high‑efficiency propulsion systems.
* Participate in innovation reviews and contribute to technology roadmaps.
Testing and Validation
* Define verification and validation requirements for performance, thermal, and structural testing.
* Correlate analytical and experimental data to refine simulation models.
* Experience in hands‑on prototyping, test bench setup, and coordination with manufacturing or testing partners will be regarded as a strong asset.
* Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including electronics, structural, and aerodynamics specialists.
* Participate in design reviews and interdisciplinary integration sessions.
* Work closely with the supply chain and procurement team for material and component selection.
Technical Documentation
* Prepare detailed design documentation, drawings, and specifications in compliance with engineering configuration control.
* Produce technical reports, test summaries, and verification evidence.
* Maintain traceability of design decisions, analyses, and test outcomes.
Customer‑Focused Solutions
* Support customer engagement through technical input, feasibility assessments, and design proposals.
* Participate in technical reviews and ensure that customer requirements are accurately reflected in engineering outputs.
Presentation and Concept Development
* Prepare and present design summaries, simulation results, and verification outcomes to relevant stakeholders.
* Contribute to conceptual development activities and system architecture studies for future programs.
Cost Management
* Evaluate cost, manufacturability, and material selection throughout the design process.
* Support cost optimization and value engineering initiatives while maintaining performance objectives.
Supply Chain
* Collaborate with procurement to identify and qualify suppliers for motor components and materials.
* Provide technical support for supplier assessments and manufacturing readiness reviews.
Qualifications & Experience
Academic qualification or equivalent extensive work experience in electronics/electrical engineering, preferably within aerospace or other highly regulated industries.
Preferred education pathways (or equivalent industrial experience)
* a) MSc / MEng in Power Electronics, Machines and Drives, Power Electronics and Drives, Electrical Machines, or closely related field.
* b) OR MEng/BEng in Electrical or Electronic Engineering with a strong focus on power electronics, electrical machines and motor drives.
Solid university‑ or industry‑level grounding in the following topics
* Electrical machines (brushless and permanent magnet machines, induction machines, synchronous machines).
* Power electronic converters and drive systems for motor control.
* Motor control theory (field‑oriented control, torque/speed control of AC machines).
* Thermal management and multiphysics aspects of electric machines (electromagnetic–thermal–structural interaction).
* Power quality and EMC considerations for power electronic systems.
* Control design and embedded/control electronics relevant to drives.
Experience
Must have
* Proven experience in electric motor design and analysis, particularly BLDC and/or PMSM for propulsion or high‑performance applications.
* Proficiency with SolidWorks, MATLAB/Simulink, and ANSYS Motor‑CAD or other FEM tools for electromagnetic and thermal modelling.
* Working knowledge of IEC, ISO, and related standards for electrical machines, insulation systems, and testing, with appreciation of how regulations and standards shape product requirements and verification.
* Familiarity with structured engineering processes, design reviews, and configuration management.
Preferred
* Experience in prototype build, test bench development, instrumentation, and coordination with manufacturing/testing partners.
* Awareness of aviation development frameworks, safety‑critical thinking, and system safety engineering.
