The Opportunity: Role purpose Model Risk Management (MRM), part of Global Risk & Compliance, is responsible for providing second line of defence for HSBC’s model risk. Model Risk Management comprises of four key activities, where the Chief Model Risk Officer provides leadership, oversight, guidance, and challenge: Model Risk Governance - Setting the firm's model risk policies and standards, ensuring that model risk is managed within the approved tolerance levels, providing second line assurance on the implementation of policy, and monitoring regulatory developments impacting model risk. Model Risk Stewardship - Facilitating responsible development, understanding and use of models and analytics, as well as providing subject matter expertise, advice, guidance, and effective challenge across all entities, regions, global businesses, and functions. Independent Model Review - Independently reviewing and (re)validating models across the group. Infrastructure – Providing Model Risk Management systems management, maintenance, and enhancements, including for Global Model Inventory System (GMIS), Appian and Chiron, along with report production and technology enhancements. In addition, the Chief Model Risk Officer oversees small teams dedicated to designing and implementing a framework for the management of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Risk and Non-Model Calculators. Regional Model Risk Governance and Risk Stewardship monitors compliance with the globally set policies and guidelines for managing risks related to models, and provides advice and guidance to support these policies. They also ensure that local regulatory requirements are adhered to and perform the secretariat role for regional Model Risk Governance on behalf of the Regional Chief Risk Officer. They complete assurance activities as required by policy and provide effective guidance to the functions, businesses, regions and countries, as well as challenging the first line to ensure that its risk management activities are working effectively. Governance and Committee Memberships N/A What you’ll do: Principal Accountabilities And Responsibilities Support the Global Model Risk Governance team to promote and facilitate regional rollout and embedding of the Model Risk Policy, Model Risk Standards and key controls. Monitoring local compliance with globally set policies that outline the key principles and minimum requirements applicable to the management of their model risk. Providing subject matter expertise, advice, and guidance to the Risk and Control Owners. Support the production of local Top & Emerging Risk Reports, Risk Maps, Risk Appetite Statement and Dashboard reporting. Working with the local lines of business, functions and/or regions to understand and gather emerging risks to feed into the Model Risk Reports (Risk Maps, Risk Appetite Statements and/or Top and Emerging Risk Reports). Perform compliance, thematic and other types of model risk assurance reviews under the direction of the Global Model Risk Governance team. Applying the Risk and Control Library locally including minimum control standards, with input from Risk Owners, Business Services and Control Owners, specifying key risks and key controls, and providing guidance on control monitoring expectations. Reporting on local risk and control profiles, including impacts of external environment changes, emerging risks, changes to the business strategy and local model risk regulatory interpretation. Providing guidance on the identification of conduct impacts across their risk types and activities owned by the first line, including where control weaknesses and risk events impact the delivery of good outcomes. Review and support approval of dispensations and risk acceptances from Model Risk Policy and Model Risk Standards from regional perspective. Review and support approval model of tier ratings from regional perspective. Support the delivery of regional model risk training, communication and education (provided globally, delivered locally). Review the global model inventory system (GMIS) from regional perspective to support accuracy and completeness. Support the operation of the regional Model Risk Committees (MRCs). Leadership & Teamwork Support activities for the Regional Head of Model Risk Management & Risk Steward to represent Model Risk Stewardship to Country/Regional-level Executive Management. Provide effective oversight to first-line risk and control owners across the end-to-end product set for model risk, whilst delivering second-line opinion across the region and countries. Support the Regional Head of Model Risk Management & Risk Steward in providing final regional approval of material models on behalf of the region, that are used following initial FLOD approval. Support the delivery of Non-Financial Risk Framework responsibilities for Model Risk within the region. Ensure that all Risk Steward deliverables to your stakeholders are concise, precise, impactful and actionable. Support entity and country teams within the region to execute local risk management strategies and motivate country teams to deliver safe and secure services to HSBC customers, clients and colleagues in all locations, whilst protecting and enhancing HSBC values, reputation and business. Provide guidance across entities and countries within the region, enabling business growth while maintaining model risk within appetite and driving innovation that enables safe growth. Support the design of the Model Risk framework across entities and countries within the region. This includes Risk Appetite, Risk Taxonomy and Risk Control Library strategy and policy framework. Input into second-line reporting on the status of model risks across all entities and countries within the region. Support provision of oversight across the countries of First-line’s adoption of Standards, Processes and Procedures required to implement the Policy objectives. Support the regular review of the use and embedding of the Operational Risk Management Framework across entities/countries within the region for Model Risk Management. Support the embedding of relevant services from the service catalogue ensuring consistent implementation across entities and countries within the region. Requirements What you will need to succeed in the role: Knowledge: Experience of model risk management, governance and/or model development / validation. Experience of local regulators and regulations. Experience of managing senior stakeholder and external communications. Knowledge and expertise of local market and HSBC’s different business lines (GBM or CMB experience preferable). Matrix management experience.
