Job Introduction

As a Specialist Occupational Therapist stroke and general Rehabilitation, you will play a key role to provide specialist Occupational Therapy intervention and management for patients requiring stroke and general rehabilitation as part of an interdisciplinary team in hospital and community settings. You will supervise more junior staff and be involved with service development keeping the patient at the centre of care.

Based in Swindon you will have the flexibility to work within a model that supports both on-site and hybrid working arrangements, depending on the nature of the role. Main Responsibility

As a Band 6 Occupational Therapist, you will share responsibility for the effective rehabilitation and daily operations of the OT team within your designated area, be it inpatient, outpatient, community, or a blend of these settings. You’ll independently manage a complex caseload, using advanced assessment and therapeutic techniques to deliver tailored, evidence-based care.

You’ll collaborate closely with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team to set meaningful goals, ensure safe discharges, and support recovery through expert advice and sensitive communication, even where barriers such as cognitive challenges exist.

Your role extends to mentoring and supervising junior staff and students, leading training sessions, and fostering a culture of professional growth and reflective practice. You’ll contribute to clinical governance, service development, and quality improvement initiatives, helping shape a forward-thinking, patient-centred therapy service.

Through strong communication and coordinated care, you’ll support seamless transitions across services, uphold high clinical standards, and embody the values of dignity, inclusion, and compassion in every aspect of your work.

The Ideal Candidate

A recognised diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy, with current registration with the HCPC.

Continued professional development (CPD) with a strong foundation of post-graduate training, particularly in neurological stroke and elderly care rehabilitation (e.g., STARS online).

Confident use of digital systems and computer literacy to support clinical and administrative tasks.

Advanced training and hands-on experience in selecting, delivering, and interpreting cognitive and perceptual assessments.

A broad and well-rounded base of clinical experience gained during time as a Band 5 Occupational Therapist.

Previous experience within NHS or NHS-commissioned services, particularly in stroke and elderly rehabilitation settings.

Proven ability to supervise and support others, including junior staff and students, fostering learning and development.

Experience in planning and delivering in-service training sessions to support team development.

A collaborative approach, demonstrated through experience of working effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Skilled in the use of outcome measures to evaluate treatment effectiveness and guide intervention.

Experience in managing complex discharge planning and case coordination, ensuring smooth transitions of care.

A strong understanding of national policies, guidelines, and service frameworks relevant to rehabilitation and elderly care.

Familiarity with the Mental Capacity Act and its application in day-to-day practice.

A commitment to evidence-based practice, with advanced knowledge of current best practice in the field.

Confidence in leading training sessions and sharing expertise with colleagues.

* Post graduate training in rehabilitation / neurology eg Bobath Adult Hemiplegia course, MSc modules or equivalent
* Relevant teaching qualification eg Clinical Educator Accreditation
* Introductory Management training
* Neurological rehabilitation experience at Band 6 level
* Experience of “team leadership”
