Overview

Ophthalmic Assistant Certified role at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Under the direction of practice providers, the assistant is responsible for clinical duties such as obtaining medical records, preparing the patient for the exam, beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements, performing preliminary eye function testing, explaining medication or procedures to patients, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms and supplies at an outpatient care site. Also responsible for some administrative duties in conjunction with patient contact.


Responsibilities

* Obtain medical records as needed.
* Prepare patients for examinations.
* Begin examinations with standard tests and measurements.
* Perform preliminary eye function testing.
* Explain medications or procedures to patients.
* Sterilize and clean equipment; maintain examination rooms and supplies at outpatient care sites.
* Assist with administrative duties in conjunction with patient contact.


Minimum Education

* High School graduate or equivalent.
* Coursework in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology/Biology or equivalent education/experience.
* Completion of an Ophthalmic Assistant program or other Health Science degree program preferred.


Minimum Work Experience

* 1 year experience, preferably in a physician practice or outpatient clinic setting involving patient contact.


Required Licenses/Certifications

* BLS Certification through American Heart Association within a month of hire.
* Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within 18 months of hire.
* Current COA from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).


Required Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities

* Willingness and ability to perform self-study and online training for completion of Ophthalmic Assistant program in pursuit of certification within 18 months of hire.
* Ability to report patient care observations and deviations from patient’s plan of care under direct supervision of a provider or certified staff.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Moderate knowledge of basic computer skills.
* Strong knowledge of Medical Terminology.


Pay Range

$20.27 - $29.96
