Overview
Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Theoretical Quantum information with high-spin nuclei – UNSW
This is a theoretical research role within the group of Professor Andrea Morello. The project focuses on demonstrating quantum information processing with high-spin nuclei in silicon, leveraging high-dimensional Hilbert space to encode robust logical qubits. The emphasis is on developing theory for quantum information processing in high-dimensional systems and guiding future experimental directions, including fault-tolerant operations, quantum error correction, and scalability beyond a single atom.
Responsibilities
* Develop and advance theoretical models for quantum information processing in high-dimensional spin systems.
* Inform and guide experimental directions for quantum information processing with high-spin nuclei in silicon.
* Contribute to the demonstration of fault-tolerant quantum operations and quantum error correction concepts.
* Collaborate with experimental teams and other theorists to integrate theory with practical device implementations.
* Communicate research progress through publications and presentations.
* Report to Scientia Professor Andrea Morello; no direct reports.
Qualifications
* PhD (or soon to be awarded) in quantum physics, quantum engineering, or a related area.
* Strong track record in developing original theory in quantum information processing and quantum error correction.
* Experience applying quantum information theory to practical experimental platforms.
* Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision and to work collaboratively across disciplines.
* Strong publication and conference presentation record relative to opportunity.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
* Commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values and to health and safety policies.
Senior Research Associate (Level B) – Qualifications
* PhD in Physics, Quantum Engineering, or a related area; previous postdoctoral experience is preferred.
* Demonstrated capability to develop original theory in quantum information processing and quantum error correction.
* Experience in day-to-day supervision of PhD and undergraduate students; leadership in writing peer-reviewed publications is an asset.
* Proven ability to work in a team and build interdisciplinary relationships.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders.
* Commitment to UNSW health and safety policies and university guidelines.
