Audio Engineer II – Acoustic Lab Specialist – 12 months Contract – Onsite Cambridge
About the Role

This role offers the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art audio lab located near Cambridge, UK, featuring advanced acoustic environments such as anechoic chambers and large configurable spaces used for capturing immersive, high-fidelity audio data. You will play a critical role in collecting, calibrating, and processing multimedia datasets that enable breakthrough audio experiences for spatial computing devices like smart glasses and other wearable tech.
Key Responsibilities
* Set up, test, and calibrate professional audio and video recording equipment in a bespoke acoustic lab environment.
* Collect high-quality multimedia data, focusing on audio and video, to support advanced research and engineering projects.
* Process and manage collected data using command line tools, scripting, and multimedia processing software to maintain data integrity.
* Collaborate closely with internal engineering teams and external data collection volunteers to achieve diverse, high-fidelity datasets.
* Maintain and troubleshoot recording equipment to ensure consistent capture quality.
* Support lab maintenance and assist with optimizing experimental setups to meet research goals.
Required Skills & Experience
* Proven experience in multimedia equipment setup and audio recording, including proficiency with digital audio workstations (DAWs), audio interfaces, speakers, and microphones.
* Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy and reliability in data collection.
* Passion for sound and audio, demonstrated through activities such as music production, recording, or playing an instrument.
* Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
* Good level of computing proficiency and comfort with data processing.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate across diverse teams.
Preferred Skills (Good to Have)
* Experience with large datasets or databases (e.g., Excel, MySQL).
* Programming or scripting abilities, preferably in Python.
* Familiarity with Linux operating system and command line tools.
* Experience with visual positioning or motion capture systems.
Education & Experience
* Degree in a numerical, scientific, or technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
* Typically 2–4 years of relevant experience in an audio engineering, AV technician, or similar role.
Location and Work Details
* Onsite presence required at an advanced acoustic research lab near Cambourne, West Cambridge, UK.
* Full-time contract for 12 months with the possibility of extension.
* Standard 40-hour workweek, no overtime anticipated.
