Our client is a distinguished UK-based engineering and fabrication specialist in the area.
The company also excels in designing, supplying, installing, and commissioning bespoke heat treatment kilns, furnaces, mechanical handling systems, refractory linings, and control assemblies across diverse industrial sectors including energy, nuclear, defence, aerospace, and environmental processing.
Role Purpose
The Estimator/buyer will estimate and subsequently purchase requirements for a range of bespoke, non-repetitive engineering projects. This role demands robust technical expertise, rigorous attention to quality and standards detailed in customer specifications, ability to understand all detail drawings and the experience of estimating previously on heavy engineering and pipework projects.
Key Responsibilities
* Estimating projects from concept designs or detailed designs and customers specifications. Conduct material take offs and accurately calculate the costs of labour, materials and equipment to produce competitive bids
* Supplier & Subcontractor Quotes:
* Obtain pricing from various suppliers and subcontractors for needed items and services.
* Risk Assessment:
* Identify and assess potential risks on a project to incorporate contingency into cost estimates.
* Technical Analysis:
* Read blueprints, drawings, and specifications to understand project scope and requirements.
* Collaboration:
* Work with engineers, designers, and other project team members to finalize cost estimates.
* Buying
* Purchasing to the quoted prices (if not cheaper) when the project is received as a contract.
* Software Use:
* Utilize specialized software, such as Excel, for calculations and to maintain cost databases.
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree in Engineering (mechanical, manufacturing, metallurgical or equivalent discipline).
* Proven background in heavy engineering, ideally in one off/batch production environments.
* Hands-on familiarity with welding standards and procedures (ARC, MIG, TIG) and European structural/encrypted norms.
* Experience with quality management systems, ISO 9001, and technical documentation (e.g., WPS, inspection plans).
* Solid track record in Estimating, delivering uniquely tailored (one-off) engineering solutions—not repetitive line items.
* Excellent communication skills, both with technical teams and clients.
* Strong structured problem-solving and organisational capability.
