Deputy Service Manager for Haematology & Blood Transfusion

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Blood Sciences at Nottingham University Hospitals for an experienced and motivated HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist to take on the role of Haematology & Blood Transfusion Deputy Service Manager.

This senior leadership position supports the operational, clinical, and strategic delivery of high-quality Haematology and Blood Transfusion services across the Trust. The post holder will work closely with the Blood Sciences Service Manager to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant laboratory services that meet the needs of patients, clinicians, and regulatory bodies.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Biomedical Scientist ready to step into a strategic leadership role within one of the largest acute teaching trusts in the UK.


Main duties of the job

The Deputy Service Manager will provide professional, operational, and managerial leadership across Haematology and Blood Transfusion, ensuring services are delivered in line with:

* HCPC standards of proficiency
* UKAS accreditation requirements (ISO 15189)
* MHRA and BSQR compliance for Blood Transfusion
* Trust governance and quality frameworks

You will deputise for the Blood Sciences Service Manager as required and play a key role in workforce planning, quality assurance, service development, financial management, and performance monitoring.

Job responsibilities

* The Haematology & Blood Transfusion Deputy Service Manager is responsible for the provision of the core Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory service of the Blood Sciences service at both main NUH sites (QMC and City Hospital).
* Provide day-to-day operational management of Haematology and Blood Transfusion services
* Lead and support a multidisciplinary team of Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners, and support staff
* Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
* Drive quality improvement, audit, and service development initiatives
* Contribute to budget management, resource allocation, and cost improvement programmes
* Support recruitment, workforce planning, appraisal, and staff development
* Manage risk, incident investigation, and governance processes
* Lead on change management and service transformation projects

Person Specification


Training & Qualifications

* State Registered BMS (HCPC) with Fellowship of IBMS
* Evidence of higher specialist training in appropriate area, gained through short courses or distance learning
* Evidence of formal management training/recognised management qualification
* Demonstration of a commitment to continuing education and training
* Postgraduate qualification in other specialisation
* Good working knowledge of specialist areas other than own and how this can be integrated to improve service


Experience

* Experience of managing and leading a significant section within a service, with a significant number of line reports
* Significant experience of effectively managing day to day HR processes
* Able to demonstrate strong leadership ability and organisational skills
* Ability to undertake effective change management and planning
* Awareness of national and local Pathology and NHS agendas
* Up to date knowledge and experience of a wide range of laboratory processes
* Awareness of technological solutions and their application
* Able to demonstrate knowledge of financial management and budgetary control


Communication and Relationship Skills

* Able to provide and receive highly complex information
* Possess well-developed influencing and motivational skills
* Able to communicate effectively with staff at all levels


Analytical and Judgement skills

* Able to make judgements involving a range of highly complex facts or situations which require analysis, and interpretation of a range of options


Planning and Organisation Skills

* Able to carry out workforce planning for a section of the service
* Able to organise a broad range of programmes pertaining to a section
* Able to develop strategies to meet objectives and workload demand
