Environment & Business Senior Advisor, Air Quality - 31816
The Environment Agency is committed to an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We are seeking a driven, proactive individual to join our National Air Quality Team to lead key streams of ongoing air quality work and a programme of Air Quality Projects, providing advice and guidance on air quality issues both internally and externally.
The role includes leadership of Environmental Assessment Levels development for key atmospheric pollutants in support of Net Zero delivery, strategic input on planning and permitting issues, data capture and use of emissions evidence, mentoring junior team members, responding to technical queries, site visits to high profile industrial sites, and contributing to air quality policy development as required (e.g., input to the Gothenburg Protocol).
The team operates within Monitoring and Assessment, as part of Regulatory Resilience in Environment and Business, promoting an inclusive culture and using evidence, expertise, engagement and innovation to enhance delivery, influence policy and secure resources.
Location: EA Office base with flexible/hybrid working; some travel and overnights may be required.

Responsibilities
* Lead the development of Environmental Assessment Levels for key atmospheric pollutants to support Net Zero delivery.
* Provide strategic input on bridging planning and permitting issues, including air quality and amenity considerations in development plans; support Environment Agency’s approach to planning consultations; shape our role as Air Quality Partners.
* Oversee and guide the capture and use of emissions data and evidence to underpin decisions and regulate more effectively (notably the Pollution Inventory data).
* Mentor and develop junior Air Quality team members.
* Contribute to all aspects of Environment Agency Air Quality work and respond to internal and external technical queries.
* Undertake site visits to high-profile industrial sites to support emission reduction measures.
* Support Defra as required in developing new or updated air quality policy (e.g., input to the Gothenburg Protocol).
Experience & Qualifications
* Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures; actively encourage others to consider diversity in their work.
* Baseline knowledge: UK and international air quality legislation; air quality standards and targets; regulation of industrial installations and use of Environmental Assessment Levels in setting permit limits; Environment Agency’s role in the planning regime.
* Ability to work with a wide range of internal and external customers; deliver technical information in accessible language; prepare, run and respond to technical consultations; influence outcomes through relationships; project management to time and budget.

Additional information
We are flexible on location and working arrangements; some travel may be required. Applications are blind assessed based on competency questions. Interviews via MS Teams within two weeks of closing date. Up to 6 months contract with possible extension.
