About The Role
Balfour Beatty Power are looking for Utilities Design Coordinators to work on one of their major projects: Lower Thames Crossing.
The roles will be based on site at the project offices located in Grays Thurrock area.
Role Purpose
The Utilities Design Coordinator will support the Utilities Design Manager and Project Manager in the coordination, management, and assurance of utilities detailed design delivery for the Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) project. The role supports the delivery of the utilities design scope, including both Contestable and Statutory Undertakers Non-Contestable designs. This will be achieved through close coordination with main works design functions and ancillary design disciplines, including temporary works, to ensure utility corridors are fixed and any subsequent changes are effectively controlled through established detailed design coordination processes. The Utilities Design Coordinator will also contribute to the administration of the detailed design contract, production of design deliverables, and support Design Managers with design management activities. This will ensure that utilities designs are fully integrated, compliant, buildable, and delivered in accordance with programme and contract requirements.
Accountabilities
* Production of Approval in Principle (AIP)/ design input documents defining the utilities design solution and scope of works, ensuring clarity of requirements and design intent throughout the detailed design and construction phases.
* Communicate design intent effectively with operations teams, third parties, the client, and internal stakeholders during both design delivery and construction phases.
* Prepare, coordinate, and contribute to design deliverables including Interface Control Documents, Utility Asset Schedules, Task Information Delivery Plans (TIDPs), and comment sheets in accordance with the agreed design programmes.
* Coordinate the timely production and submission of utilities detailed design deliverables, including drawings and models, in accordance with the programme requirements.
* Coordinate design inputs and outputs required for utilities detailed design delivery, ensuring alignment with construction methodology, sequencing, and temporary works to achieve coordinated solutions.
* Support design development and assurance activities, ensuring utilities designs comply with contract requirements, statutory approvals, technical standards, and project governance.
* Assist with the review, checking, and coordination of approvals for design deliverables including models, drawings, and other outputs, administering associated CDE workflows processes where required.
* Maintain design management records, track, and respond to Technical Queries (TQs), Requests for Information (RFIs), design assumptions, and design actions, ensuring accuracy and timely close-out.
* Monitor design delivery performance, risks, and issues and provide regular updates to the Utilities Design Manager and Project Manager.
* Contribute to identification and management of hazards ensuring utilities designs are safe, buildable, cost-effective, and compliant with Health & Safety legislation, CDM Regulations, environmental standards, and Safety by Design principles.
Key Responsibilities
* Work closely with Design Managers and discipline leads across the LTC project and Balfour Beatty Group to ensure fully coordinated utilities design solutions.
* Deliver required detailed design outputs, including drawings and models, for contestable and non-contestable works in line with programme requirements.
* Contribute to the assessment of design feasibility and the impact of proposed engineering solutions on the wider LTC design scope.
* Monitor design progress, performance, risks, and issues against scope and budget, providing regular reporting to the Design Manager and Project Manager to support escalation and governance.
* Maintain design management deliverables inc. TQ/RFI/EWN, assumptions registers, meeting minutes, design actions log, as required and ensure these are kept up to date and tracked and closed out in line with design programme and contract requirements.
* Coordinate with other specialist Services colleagues as required to leverage opportunities for design and programme and construction efficiencies.
* Promote the objectives and requirements projects ‘Right First Time’ culture throughout the detailed design and construction phases of the project lifecycle.
* Administer design processes in line with projects plans and procedures i.e. Design Management Plan, Quality Plan, to ensure compliance with statutory undertaker, projects design requirements, CDM regulations.
* Ensure that all design work is conducted in accordance with Company Safety Rules, Health & Safety Legislation and Environmental standards and set standards in the Substations function for Safety by Design.
The Following Qualities/experience Are Essential
* Civil Engineering degree or significant multi-utilities industry experience.
* Proven design coordination experience across multi-disciplinary utilities on major infrastructure or transport projects.
* Understanding of Contestable and Non-Contestable utilities design and delivery processes.
* Highly organised with strong coordination skills within a construction or engineering environment.
* Ability to constructively challenge and optimise design solutions, balancing risk, constraints, and project requirements.
* Experience using BIM Common Data Environment (CDE) or similar information management systems such as Bentley ProjectWise, Autodesk Construction Cloud.
* Intermediate ability using design and CAD software such as AutoCAD, ACC, Civil 3D, Bentley MicroStation, GIS.
* Experience in client and stakeholder engagement, including liaison with Statutory Undertakers.
* Knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations, including Designer and Principal Designer duties.
* Knowledge of the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991 and NJUG guidance.
* Strong commitment to health and safety, aligned with Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm philosophy.
* Firm understanding of and belief to drive health & safety principles in line with Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm philosophy.
* Membership of a relevant professional body (ICE, APM) (Desirable)
* CSCS and SMSTS certification (Desirable).
