Job Description

Estates Engineer (Electrical or Mechanical) – Chelmsford / Basildon

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Estates Technician to join our clients Estates & Facilities Maintenance team. This is a technically demanding role supporting healthcare environments across an acute hospital site, ensuring critical engineering services remain safe, compliant and operational at all times.

The Role

As an Estates Technician, you will undertake complex planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs and minor improvement works across a wide range of building services and estates plant. Your duties will span electrical and/or mechanical systems including LV power distribution, lighting and emergency lighting, generators, UPS/IPS systems, fire detection, nurse call, boilers, ventilation and air handling units, chiller plant, water systems, medical gases and associated controls.

You will diagnose faults, respond to breakdowns and critical alarms (including via Building Management Systems), participate in emergency responses such as power outages, fire alarms and lift entrapments, and ensure all works comply with statutory requirements, Trust policies, Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and Health & Safety legislation. The role also involves maintaining accurate records using CAFM systems, completing risk assessments, liaising with contractors, and supporting sustainability and energy-efficiency objectives. Participation in the on-call rota is a mandatory requirement.

Academic and Professional Requirements

Applicants must have completed a recognised apprenticeship in an electrical or mechanical engineering discipline, or demonstrate equivalent experience, supported by relevant City & Guilds qualifications (or equivalent). Significant post-apprenticeship experience within building services or estates maintenance is essential.

An NVQ, BTEC, HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline is desirable.

An enhanced DBS will be processed as part of the clients vetting/onboarding process.

You will also need strong fault-finding skills, the ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics, good IT literacy (including Word, Excel and CAFM systems), and the confidence to work independently while supporting wider estates teams.

This is an excellent opportunity to apply your technical expertise in a critical healthcare setting and progress your engineering career within a large, forward-looking NHS Trust.
