Teacher of Geography- Maternity Cover from April 2026

We anticipate a potential promoted post within the Faculty for a candidate who demonstrates the appropriate skills and experience for a fixed term initially.

Post: Teacher of Geography
Responsible to: Faculty Head of Social Sciences
Working Pattern: Full-time

We are seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring Teacher of Geography to join our thriving Humanities Faculty. The successful candidate will be passionate about their subject and committed to delivering high-quality teaching and learning across a range of abilities and age groups. The successful candidate will be registered, or eligible to be registered, with GTC Scotland.


Key Responsibilities

* Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging and challenging lessons in Geography, including A Level, SQA Higher/Advanced Higher, and relevant vocational or applied pathways, including BTEC, where appropriate.

* Support pupils in developing the analytical, evaluative, and fieldwork skills essential for strong attainment in Geography courses.

* Assess, record, and report on the progress and attainment of pupils in accordance with Faculty and school policies.

* Contribute to the continued development of schemes of work, resources, and teaching strategies within the Geography context.

* Maintain high expectations for pupil achievement and behaviour, fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

* Participate fully in departmental and Faculty meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development opportunities.

* Contribute to the wider life of the school through involvement in co-curricular activities, clubs, trips, and events, including fieldwork where appropriate.

* Engage in continual professional reflection to enhance teaching practice and support departmental improvement.

* Act as an Academic Tutor to an appropriate tutor group.


Essential Qualifications and Experience

* A good honours degree in Geography or a closely related discipline.

* Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE or equivalent).

* Proven experience teaching Geography at A Level.

* Experience of teaching SQA Higher and Advanced Higher Geography.

* Strong subject knowledge and understanding of current curriculum developments in Geography.

* Evidence of delivering consistently high-quality teaching and learning.


Desirable Qualifications and Experience

* Experience of teaching across a range of examination boards and specifications.

* Experience of teaching BTEC Countryside Management.

* Familiarity with AQA A Level Geography specifications.

* Experience in planning and delivering geographical fieldwork.

* Experience in using technology, GIS, or digital tools to enhance learning.

* Experience in contributing to departmental development or curriculum innovation.

* Experience with the Google Suite.

* A genuine enthusiasm for Geography and the ability to inspire that enthusiasm in pupils.

* Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to create a positive, inclusive learning environment.

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work as part of a team and build positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents.

* High expectations of pupils’ achievement and behaviour.

* Commitment to continual professional development and reflective practice.

* A collaborative approach and willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school.

* Demonstrable experience of pastoral care provision.

General Expectations

The post holder is expected to work within the policies, ethos, and aims of the College and undertake other reasonable duties as assigned by the Faculty Head or Deputy Head Academic. All staff contribute to the pastoral life of the school and are expected to serve as Academic Tutors.

The Teacher of Geography will be expected to:

* Attend parent evenings and academic events.

* Be part of a House tutor team.

* Contribute to the College’s extensive co-curricular programme.

* Assist with cover, supervision, and exam invigilation as needed.

* Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of life in a busy boarding school.

All staff are required to engage in professional review and development (“PRD”) to maintain and enhance their practice.

This is subject to review and may be amended to meet the evolving needs of the College.


Terms

The College has its own pay scale. We can offer you a competitive salary, complimentary refreshments during working hours, a good working environment as part of a close-knit team, and the possibility of opportunities for the role to grow and develop. Housing on-site may be offered. Please state in your application if you would like to apply for on-site housing.

Fee concessions are available for staff children who attend Glenalmond, and there are various reciprocal arrangements with local Prep schools.
