Animal, Woodlands & Education Support Officer (with Food Growing & Community Engagement Responsibilities) About the Role This is a unique, varied, and hands on role combining animal care, woodland and habitat management, food growing, and education support for learners, volunteers, and community groups.
You’ll be part of a small, dedicated team helping to maintain high welfare standards for our animals, support sustainable land based practices, and deliver engaging, practical learning experiences across the farm.
The role is ideal for someone who thrives outdoors, enjoys working with people of all ages, and is passionate about animal welfare, conservation, food growing, and inclusive education.
You will play a key part in supporting our seasonal activity programmes, school visits, and the launch of our new workshops and corporate team building days, helping to generate future income for the farm.
Carry out daily husbandry for a range of farm and small animals (feeding, watering, grooming, mucking out, enrichment).
Monitor animal health and behaviour; report concerns promptly.
Assist with routine health checks, treatments, and record keeping in line with welfare legislation.
Maintain clean, safe, and species appropriate enclosures.
Support biosecurity measures, including disinfection procedures and zoonosis control.
Ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and relevant farm assurance standards.
Support woodland maintenance including coppicing, planting, habitat creation, and path management.
Use hand tools and small machinery safely (training provided where needed).
Assist with biodiversity monitoring and conservation projects.
Maintain safe working areas in line with Health & Safety and environmental best practice.
Contribute to sustainable land use planning and seasonal woodland tasks.
Food Growing & Horticulture
Support the planning, planting, and maintenance of food growing areas across the farm.
Assist with seasonal vegetable production, propagation, soil care, and harvesting.
Help develop growing spaces used for education, wellbeing, and community engagement.
Demonstrate sustainable horticultural practices to learners and visitors.
Education & Community Support Duties
Assist tutors in delivering practical sessions for college learners, school groups, nurseries, and community visitors.
Prepare resources, equipment, and animals for practical lessons and workshops.
Demonstrate safe handling, welfare assessment, and husbandry techniques during sessions.
Support learners with varying needs, ensuring sessions are inclusive and accessible.
Help develop worksheets, practical guides, and enrichment activities.
Supervise small groups during practical tasks in the farm, garden, or woodland environment.
Seasonal Activities & Income Generating Programmes
Deliver seasonal children’s activities (e.g., half term clubs, nature crafts, farm experiences).
Support the launch and delivery of new workshops, school visits, and corporate team building days.
Contribute ideas for new activities that enhance visitor experience and generate income.
Provide excellent customer service to visiting groups and organisations.
Experience working with animals in a farm, sanctuary, or educational setting.
Confidence handling a range of species (sheep, goats, poultry, small mammals).
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Strong communication skills and a supportive, learner focused approach.
Good understanding of health & safety, PPE, and risk assessment principles.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Willingness to work flexibly, including weekends and seasonal tasks.
Experience in woodland management, conservation, or horticulture.
Experience supporting teaching, training, or community activities.
Qualifications in Animal Care, Land based Studies, Forestry, Horticulture, or similar.
First Aid qualification (human or animal).
Knowledge of UK welfare legislation and environmental standards.
Experience delivering workshops, children’s activities, or visitor programmes.
