Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen at our Bedford ED site, increasing our Band 7 senior ED nurse Team.

As an experienced senior nurse leader, the post holder is expected to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, planning and providing high quality care for patients with acute illness or injury within the Emergency Department.

The post holder will lead teams of nurses planning the workload of the team and providing advice and support as needed.

The post holder will take managerial control of the department when on duty.

The post holder will take responsibility for specific senior management roles within the department.

Responsible for leading teams of nurses and other health care professionals working within the department to ensure the smooth operational flow and exceptional patient care.

To act as a role model to the team, providing sound clinical advice, guidance and expertise.

To maintain and promote effective leadership, inspiring and innovating the team.

Participate in the Streaming of ED attenders to alternative pathways.

Main duties of the job

Be responsible for the evaluation of the effectiveness of emergency care, by daily reviewing the care being given, from reports from other nursing staff, direct observation for the patient and ensuring that accurate nursing records are maintained, through monitoring and auditing.

To participate in non-clinical management processes i.e. Performance Review, sickness management, recruitment and selection and ensuring annual appraisals are undertaken.

Use communications skills to interview patients in order to assess their condition and allocate them to the most appropriate area or department for care.

Remain calm, professional and non-judgemental when faced with violent or aggressive patients and relatives those under the influence of alcohol or drugs, patients suffering from Mental Health Issues and those with poor personal hygiene and /or infestations on a daily basis.

Be able to deal with frequent exposure to unpleasant sights such as major wounds or bleeding, emaciated patients and bodily fluids.

Be able to plan own workload in a busy, noisy environment where there are frequent interruptions and unpredictable changes in demand.

Ensure that the National Service Framework for Paediatric Services is adhered to and that Child Protection Policies are followed

Clinical Governance

Responsible for ensuring that all accidents / incidents are reported to the appropriate Manager.

Investigate, action plan and share learning from incidents.

Maintain and share up to date knowledge of current research relevant to emergency care.

Ensure that Nursing Practice is research based and follows best practice.

Take part in and lead clinical trials and audits such as comparing different types of equipment or treatment and their effectiveness.

Investigate concerns and complaints and share learning with the rest of the multidisciplinary team.

Participate in Daily incident review meetings.

Participate in PSIRP process as investigator

General Management

Will ensure that regular cleaning of equipment, the reporting faults to the appropriate department or person and the removal of defective equipment from use takes place.

Monitor and promote excellent IPC measures.

Take responsibility for the safe storage of patients valuable and property whilst in the emergency department in line with trust policy.

Ensure that junior nursing staff comply with NMC / HCPC and Trust guidelines, protocols and policies.

To plan and manage the workload of a team of nurses and doctors in conjunction with the senior clinician in a busy, unpredictable and ever changing environment.

Take overall charge of the Department and carry responsibility for the health & safety of patients, visitors and staff.

Carry responsibility for the appropriate, safe and effective delivery of care within the department when on duty.

Make decisions relating to the management of workload where multiple factors conflict, based on the current and expected level of activity within the department, ensuring that the service can respond appropriately to a sudden emergency situation or influx of patients such as a multi victim trauma.

To be aware of government targets and ensure that these are met appropriately for the patients in their attending the department and escalate when there is a risk to achieving targets – utilising of escalation triggers.

Ensure that staffing levels are safe and appropriate for their shift and the next 24-48 hrs and escalate accordingly

Participate as roster co-ordinator.

Participate in Roster Assurance

Attend Department Management Team meetings and contribute to decision-making relating to departmental working practices and policies; attend a minimum of 75% per year.

Create formal departmental policies and protocols where appropriate.

Fulfil the role of Team Manager taking responsibility for the management of a team of staff; carry out appraisals, performance reviews and training needs analysis for team members and chair team meetings.

Carry out disciplinary procedure as required in collaboration with the ED Matron / HR.

Be part of interview panels for appointments at band 6 and below.

Teaching and Learning

To support and supervise junior staff in their day to day work.

To act as Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor of pre-registration Students on placement in the ED.

To carry out in-service teaching for junior staff, whether registered nurses, healthcare assistants or non-nursing students.

Work closely with the Practice Development Nurse to ensure mandatory training is maintained with all grades of staff.

Identify and support staff who may need help.

Total Patient Experience

Assist, in conjunction with the ED Matron, Head of Nursing, Deputy Head of Nursing and the Head of Service, to continue to develop and set standards of care, taking into account relevant published and local research.

Major Incident

To maintain and up to date knowledge of the trust Major Incident Policy and Department and Role specific plan

In the event of a major incident being declared and a call inn of staff being undertaken you should report to the Nurse in charge of ED as soon as possible.

Undertake training and remain competent in the use of decontamination equipment for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear & Explosive (CBRNE) contaminated patients.

Undertake the Decontamination of patients from a CBRN incident as required.

Undertake training and maintain competence in scene safety and the use of Personal Protective Equipment used in the pre-hospital setting.

Be prepared to be sent to the scene of a serious incident / major incident to provide emergency care in the pre-hospital setting.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Current NMC registration as a nurse or current HCPC registration in an appropriate field (ODP / Paramedic etc.)
2. Evidence of Post Graduate degree level emergency nursing / relevant extensive ED experience
3. Minimum Level 1 trauma competencies completed incl TILS or TTEC.
4. Advanced Life Support
