Main duties of the job
The Deputy Head of Service – Stop Smoking provides technical, operational and pathway leadership for the smoking cessation element of the One You Kent Service. The postholder will oversee day‑to‑day operational performance, quality, workforce leadership and service delivery, ensuring that smoking cessation services are safe, evidence‑based, outcome‑focused and fully aligned with national guidance and local commissioning priorities.
Working in partnership with the Head of Service, the role translates strategic direction into high‑quality operational delivery, providing subject‑matter expertise, overseeing performance against key performance indicators and line‑managing some of the Operational Team Leads. Each lead across the service is responsible for embedding excellent smoking cessation pathways and clinics. The Deputy Head also plays a key role in service development, pathway improvement and partnership working, particularly across primary care, secondary care, maternity and mental health settings.
The duty holder will use performance data and insight to identify risks and improvement opportunities, produce reports in line with commissioner expectations and contribute to demonstrating the impact of the service through annual reporting and communications activity.
In addition, the postholder will support service development, innovation, and pathway redesign, building strong relationships with healthcare professionals and partner organisations to strengthen referral pathways and collaborative working. Compliance with governance, safeguarding and clinical standards is maintained, the pathway is represented at stakeholder meetings and the role deputises for the Head of Service where required.
