About The Role
Balfour Beatty Power T&D is looking to recruit an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our Power Commercial Team. This role will initially be based on the HS2 Project, with future opportunities across the South East, offering exposure to some of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in the industry. You will attend weekly meetings in Derby and Birmingham, with site visits across the Birmingham and Coventry region.
Purpose of the Role
The Assistant Quantity Surveyor supports the commercial management of projects under the guidance of a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor. The role provides structured exposure to cost management, contract administration, procurement, and supply chain management, supporting the successful delivery of major utilities and infrastructure projects. This position offers strong development opportunities, building technical and commercial capability while working towards professional membership of RICS, ICES, or CIOB.
What you\'ll be doing
* Maintain awareness of Balfour Beatty governance requirements and support compliance with BMS and commercial procedures.
* Assist with the preparation of cost reports, forecasts, and budgets.
* Support interim valuations, payment applications, and cost value reconciliations (CVRs).
* Assist in tracking project costs, variations, and change control.
* Support the preparation and close-out of final accounts.
* Support contract administration in accordance with the agreed form of contract (typically NEC3/NEC4).
* Help maintain accurate commercial records and cost data.
* Assist in monitoring compliance with contractual obligations and internal governance processes.
* Support subcontractor procurement, including tender enquiries, evaluations, and contract administration.
* Assist with subcontractor payments, variations, and performance monitoring.
* Help maintain effective working relationships with the supply chain.
* Identify potential commercial risks and opportunities and escalate as appropriate.
* Support the maintenance of risk registers and change logs.
* Contribute to regular commercial and financial reporting.
* Work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, procurement, and commercial colleagues.
* Support senior commercial staff with day-to-day commercial activities.
* Actively work towards proactive professional development and chartership.
Who we\'re looking for
* An organised, innovative, and creative Assistant Quantity Surveyor with enthusiasm for gaining knowledge and experience of working on diverse projects and portfolios.
* Some experience within a construction or infrastructure environment.
* Basic understanding of commercial and cost management principles.
* Awareness of NEC contracts (NEC3/NEC4 desirable).
* Strong numerical, organisational, and analytical skills.
* Ability to manage workload and meet deadlines.
* Good communication and teamwork skills.
* Demonstration of resilience and determination to succeed (achievement focus).
* Proactively manage opportunities, risks, and threats.
