Telford & Wrekin Council is seeking a proactive and skilled Social Worker to join our busy and vital Duty & Assessment Team. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment, making crucial initial decisions and undertaking robust assessments that shape the future for children and families in Telford and Wrekin.

About the Role:

As a Social Worker in the Duty & Assessment Team, you will be the first point of contact for new referrals concerning children who may be at risk. Your role will involve screening contacts, gathering information, undertaking timely and thorough assessments (including Section 47 enquiries), and formulating initial plans. You will be responsible for identifying risk, needs, and strengths, ensuring that children receive appropriate and proportionate responses from the outset.

Key Responsibilities:

Receive and screen new referrals and contacts concerning children, assessing urgency and level of risk.

Gather comprehensive information from various sources, including families, professionals, and partner agencies.

Undertake initial visits and complete accurate and analytical assessments (e.g., Child in Need, Section 47 enquiries) within statutory timescales.

Formulate clear and concise plans, recommending appropriate pathways for children and families (e.g., Child in Need, Child Protection, no further action).

Collaborate effectively with multi-agency partners, including police, health, education, and early help services, to ensure coordinated responses.

Provide immediate safeguarding interventions where necessary, adhering to safeguarding policies and procedures.

Present findings and recommendations confidently in team meetings and to managers.

Maintain meticulous and timely electronic records in line with local and national requirements.

Provide advice and guidance to members of the public and professionals regarding child welfare concerns.

What We Are Looking For:

A qualified Social Worker with current Social Work England (SWE) registration.

Minimum 3 years post qualifying experience in a frontline statutory children's social care setting, ideally within a Duty & Assessment, Referral & Assessment, or Safeguarding team.

Strong knowledge of relevant children's legislation, statutory guidance, and best practice (e.g., Children Act 1989 & 2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children).

Demonstrable skills in undertaking robust initial assessments, risk assessment, and decision-making under pressure.

Excellent communication, analytical, and report-writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly and concisely.

Ability to manage a demanding and fast-paced workload, prioritise effectively, and respond calmly in crisis situations.

Resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to child-centred practice.

Proficiency in using IT systems for case management and record-keeping.

Full UK driving license and access to a car for work purposes, as the role requires travel across the borough..

Ready to be the vital first line of defence for children in Telford and Wrekin?
