An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Clinical Chemistry Department at Hull, part of the Scarborough, Hull and York Pathology Service (SHYPS)

You will join a dedicated team delivering an efficient, high-quality diagnostic service within a busy Clinical Biochemistry laboratory. The role involves participation in scientific work for the investigation of pathological disease. The post holder will have in-depth scientific knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry with particular emphasis on toxicology, trace elements, chromatography and mass spectrometry.

The successful candidate will work within the Specialist Biochemistry section, which provides a wide range of specialist analytical services. The equipment within the section includes two Mass Spectrometers, HPLC, ICP-MS, HM-JACKarc, and two Phadia Immunocap analysers. The service offers an extensive repertoire of specialist testing including Toxicology, Trace Metals, and Immunosuppressant monitoring.

We are keen to hear from enthusiastic and motivated individuals who have an interest in method development and wanting to be involved with expanding the testing repertoire within the department. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to further develop their specialist scientific knowledge and contribute to service innovation.

Applicants who have successfully completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio will be employed on the appropriate AfC Band 6 rate if successful.

Main duties of the job

1. To carry out the analysis of patient samples providing a range of diagnostic methods, including participation in method development and validation activities to support service improvement and expansion of the testing repertoire.
2. To ensure the quality and timeliness of results by use of internal quality controls (IQC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
3. To ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
4. To perform technical validation of patient results.
5. To communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users regarding patient results and service updates.
6. Participation in the mid-box rota within the Automated Biochemistry section

Essential criteria

15. BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course (or alternative IBMS-approved qualification)
16. Registration with the HCPC

Desirable criteria

17. Specialist portfolio in related discipline or IBMS Log Book in the relevant discipline1

Experience

Essential criteria

18. Experience of working in a Biochemistry Department
19. Two years post registration experience in an HCPC approved diagnostic laboratory and successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or successful completion of the IBMS Log Book in the relevant discipline1

Desirable criteria

20. Experience in a Biochemistry laboratory offering a similar test repertoire
