Responsibilities

* To provide a qualified time-limited counselling service to patients referred to the NMOSD team in NMOSD clinics.
* To formulate and implement coherent treatment and/or management plans for patients presenting psychological difficulties based on an appropriate conceptual framework and employ therapeutic interventions most appropriate to the individual case.
* To provide signposting information and advice to patients regarding accessing psychological support and community engagement with NHS, statutory and Third Sector organisations as appropriate.
* When necessary, arrange onward referral of patients to other NHS and non-NHS teams and organisations.
* To offer advice and consultation on patients’ psychological care to the NMOSD team and wider professional groups including GPs, primary and community teams.
* To liaise with other NHS and community services as appropriate.
* To monitor and audit evidence-based practice.
* To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of patients.
* To work within professional guidelines and the WCFT framework of policies and procedures.


Teaching, Training and Supervision

* To receive regular clinical professional supervision.
* To gain additional highly specialist experience and skills relevant to clinical counselling/psychotherapy.
* To provide advice, consultation and training to staff working within the NMOSD team.


Management, Recruitment, Policy and Service Development

* To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring, service evaluation and audit.


Research and Service Evaluation

* To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and with other team members.
* To undertake project management, including audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the service to help develop service provision.


IT Responsibilities

* To maintain professional and personal records on computer, as appropriate.
* To enter data onto local Trust IT systems and databases, as appropriate.
* To utilise IT methodologies, such as e-mail and the internet, to access clinical and professional information and to communicate with colleagues.


General

* To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice.
* To maintain high standards of clinical record keeping, including electronic data entry and reporting, and to adhere to professional codes of practice and Trust policies.
* To stay up to date with legislation and local/national policies relevant to the client group and mental health.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Essential: Qualified Counsellor / Psychotherapist, current registrant on a PSA-accredited register (BACP, BPC, UKCP, NCS, COSCA, UKAHPP) OR Qualified Counselling Psychologist, current HCPC registrant, with CBT experience OR substantial post-qualification experience of generic counselling.
* Continued professional development including knowledge of other clinical modalities and theoretical models.
* Desirable: Specialist training relevant to long-term/neurological conditions.


Knowledge & Experience

* Essential: Experience of working therapeutically with populations with long-term health conditions; experience delivering evidence-based psychological interventions; ability to manage a caseload; strong written communication; ongoing professional development.
* Desirable: Experience with complex physical health conditions; multidisciplinary team work; teaching and liaison with other professionals; experience with audit.


Skills & Attributes

* Essential: Excellent verbal and written communication; IT proficiency; ability to communicate sensitive clinical information effectively.
* Desirable: Knowledge of CBT applications for difficult-to-treat groups.


Other

* Essential: Understanding of anxiety and depression in rare neurological disorders; ability to work in a team; ability to work under pressure; commitment to evidence-based therapies; willingness to engage in supervision and personal development; alignment with Trust values.
* Desirable: Knowledge of medications used in anxiety and depression and other common mental health problems.
