Job Summary

Join one of the UKs leading tertiary Neurosurgery centres at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, our Neurosurgery department is recognised for its subspecialty expertise, research-driven innovation, and regional leadership across the West Midlands. This is an opportunity to be part of a high-performing, multidisciplinary team delivering complex cranial neurosurgical care, including a dedicated neurovascular service. With access to advanced surgical technologies, a full neurosciences unit, and a supportive culture of professional development and collaboration, the department offers an outstanding environment for consultants seeking to develop or expand a specialist interest while contributing to the Trusts strategic objectives around excellence in care, education and research.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

The role requires demonstrated competence in the full spectrum of cranial neurosurgery, with particular experience in neurovascular procedures at post-CCT or post-fellowship level. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the development of the neurovascular service, and engaging with regional colleagues to ensure timely, effective patient care across the wider network.

The appointed Consultant will play a key role in the delivery of both elective and emergency cranial neurosurgical services, contributing to the general cranial On-Call rota on a 1:9 basis. A significant focus of the role will be within the neurovascular subspecialty, where the postholder will be expected to manage both elective and urgent vascular cases, applying advanced surgical skills to complex patient presentations.

In addition to their subspecialty responsibilities, the Consultant will provide comprehensive care for a cohort of general cranial neurosurgical patients. This includes active involvement across the full clinical pathway—from the initial triage and assessment of referrals, through surgical intervention and inpatient care, to appropriate discharge planning or onward referral.

Working closely with multidisciplinary colleagues within UHB and across the regional network, the Consultant will contribute to the timely and effective management of neurosurgical cases, supporting equitable access to specialist care for patients across the West Midlands.

Job Description
