Job overview
The Anaesthetic Department at the WHH is looking to recruit a dynamic and forward-thinking individual to join our team of dedicated clinicians. Providing surgical services for the regional head and neck cancer service, colorectal cancer and other specialties, including gynae, ENT, trauma surgery, breast, paediatrics and ophthalmology.
There is also a 24-hour pPCI cardiology service. We are a regional level 2 trauma unit and have a busy obstetric unit with 4000 deliveries a year. Chronic pain, vascular and urology services are based at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital. Most elective orthopaedic services are also now provided at the state-of-the-art Elective Orthopaedic Centre in Canterbury and there will be an opportunity to work across more than one hospital site.
There is a well-established preassessment service providing support for all surgical specialties. The hospital has recently built a new 24-bedded intensive care unit, and the emergency department is also undergoing extensive refurbishment. The anaesthetic department is supportive of educational and research opportunities and provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary simulation training across the trust and the region.
The new Kent and Medway Medical School offers an opportunity to be involved in undergraduate education locally. There are departmental monthly audit/educational half days, free from clinical commitment and a well-established weekly education half day for trainees, led by consultant staff.
Main duties of the job
Our department is a sociable, friendly and supportive team. We have excellent administrative support and a large communal office.
This is a 10PA post which includes 2 SPAs.
Job plans within the Anaesthetic Department at William Harvey Hospital are flexible and can be honed to reflect the particular skills and experience of the applicant. Many specialist clinical interests can be supported, either within William Harvey Hospital or across the trust.
Role specific duties
• Provide safe, evidence based anaesthetic care for a variety of surgical lists at William Harvey Hospital with an opportunity to work on other trust sites.
• Maintain and improve standards and quality of anaesthetic services
• Supervise and train junior staff including junior doctors, medical students and other clinical staff within theatres.
• Other educational roles will be supported and educational qualifications are desirable.
• Maintain skills and update knowledge base meeting the Continuing Education and Professional development requirement of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
• Participate in the audit programme of the department
• Lead tutorials and department meetings in rotation with other staff
• Participate in the consultant on call rota

Person specification
Qualifications and training
* FRCA or equivalent
* CCT/CESR in Anaesthesia (or within 6 months of CCT
* Full GMC registration
* Experience in airway/maxillofacial anaesthesia or paediatric anaesthesia.
Skills and experience
* Experience of working within the NHS
* Wide experience of adult and paediatric anaesthesia
* Post CCT clinical experience.
* Leadership roles.
Clinical governance
* Evidence of involvement in Audit/QI/Governance processes
* Involvement in research.
* Leadership or management course.
Other requirements
* Able to provide on-call commitment at William Harvey Hospital
