Job Description:
Brief Description
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway safe and efficient for passengers and freight.
Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds. This might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training for safe and competent work on the network.
If you excel, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that was ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
About the role (External)
Technicians serve as a vital link between team leaders and operatives.
Specializing in Track Maintenance, you will maintain, inspect, and repair the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This involves manual work with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and structures supporting the trains.
Working outdoors year-round, you will often transport equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, rule adherence, and teamwork are essential, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.
You matter to your team
As a natural team player, you’ll lead when asked, ensuring work safety and verifying team competencies. You will model safe behaviors and proactively address safety risks.
You matter to us
Technicians can advance to future team leadership roles. We value your commitment to continuous learning and will provide training to develop technical and non-technical skills. Even if transitioning from another industry, our structured training will prepare you for a fulfilling rail career.
While rail experience isn't mandatory, you must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet these criteria:
* Leadership: Ability to motivate and direct a team safely and efficiently.
* Effective communication: Deliver clear instructions to colleagues.
* Technical skills: Knowledge in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
* Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem-solving: Persistently find safe and effective solutions, keeping skills updated.
* Willingness to learn: Continually develop relevant skills and stay updated on standards and procedures.
* Relevant qualification: Ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 in your discipline or equivalent experience.
Additional considerations
* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor work: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Safety checks: Employment is subject to drug/alcohol tests, medical, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
* Driving: Must hold a category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute: Reside within a 60-minute commute of the location.
