Overview
This role is a new Matron post within the ophthalmology department at Whipps Cross Hospital. The department offers a busy out‑patients service, full optometry clinic, pre‑operative assessment, two dedicated operating theatres and a recovery area. It includes an eye casualty unit operating Monday through Friday 9‑5.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide clinical leadership to band 7 nurses within clinics, eye casualty, operating theatres and support the PDN.
* Deliver strategic oversight for the Surgical & Cancer division, specifically the Eye Treatment Centre.
* Ensure consistent high standards of nursing care, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance including standards set by the Care Quality Commission.
* Support nursing leads and multidisciplinary team in the delivery of safe, compassionate care.
* Champion clinical initiatives, including advanced practice skills such as injection clinics.
* Lead and assist in the development of the wider ophthalmology service.
* Manage nursing resources and educational/research activities with managerial duties.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered nurse with extensive ophthalmology experience.
* Advanced nursing practice experience, including clinical sessions in ophthalmology services.
* Demonstrated leadership and strategic planning capability.
* Strong communication and team‑working skills.
* Experience in quality improvement and regulatory frameworks.
