The appointed person will support the University within the School of Physics and Astronomy outreach & engagement team and student recruitment team, carrying out work, providing advice, guidance and support, and leading projects within this area. This will be in partnership with the a number of engagement and recruitment activities across the School, and the various research groups: condensed matter & photonics, the Cardiff Hube for Astrophysics Research and Technology (CHART), the gravity exploration institute and the brain imaging group.
Key Duties
* Provide professional advice and guidance on physics and astronomy outreach and engagement processes and procedures to internal and external stakeholders that will have institute wide impacts, particularly engagement teams, staff, students, industry partners and funding bodies. This will require using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood
* Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within physics and astronomy outreach and engagement where they fall within set role objectives
* Investigate and analysis specific issues within physics and astronomy outreach and engagement, creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within outreach and education/engagement
* Ensure that the provision of activities and events relating to physics and astronomy outreach and engagement is delivered to the institution (staff, students) and externally (teachers, schools, the public), proactively changing the delivery according to audience requirements
* Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University's Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required, including engagement teams, academic staff, CS Hub, teachers/schools, industry bodies, external contractors and funding bodies.
* Create specific working groups from colleagues across the University to achieve the outreach and engagement objectives of the School of Physics and Astronomy and the research groups.
* Plan and deliver specific small scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed
* Evaluate activities and report on results to the School of Physics and Astronomy and other partners, including contributions to REF in collaboration with the Head of Public Engagement and Director of Innovation and Engagement
* Develop and deliver training within physics and astronomy outreach and engagement
* Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department
* Instruct and guide other employees across the University within the School of Physics and Astronomy

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Education
* Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience in a STEM-related subject
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* Substantial experience of working within schools education/outreach and/or STEM engagement
* Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within STEM engagement or school education/outreach to give advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholders
* Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
* Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people
* Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
* Proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments
Planning, Analysis and Problem solving
* Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions
* Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances in education and/or engagement within physics and astronomy
* Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams
Desirable Criteria
* An undergraduate degree in physics or astronomy, or experience working with large physics engagement or education projects
* Experience communicating, building relationships and creating networks with a wide range of audiences and stakeholders
* Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
* Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
