The Historic Houses Foundation is an independent charity which gives grants to help preserve heritage buildings of architectural significance, particularly historic country houses, their gardens and grounds, and the works of art within them, as well as related estate infrastructure. It makes grants annually in the region of £700,000. The Director is the sole employee of the charity: a critical role and one which includes a broad range of responsibilities.

The Role
Key Responsibilities include:
managing grant applications
preparing documents for the board
providing advice to the board to assist in decision making
implementing board decisions
preparing the annual accounts
representing the charity externally
organising relevant site visits between each board meeting (no grant is given without a quorate body of trustees visiting and inspecting site and meeting the applicants and their professional advisors).
The Candidate
An experienced individual is required with the maturity, flexibility, adaptability and overall ability to work with trustees and the willingness to conduct administrative tasks, financial reporting and ensuring the smooth day to day running of the charity. As a result of the number of visits each year, the Director will spend significant time with trustees and so that relationship is particularly important.
The ideal candidate will bring:
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge, and ideally experience, of charity administration and company secretarial responsibilities.
Experience of preparing budgets and bookkeeping.
Enthusiasm, self-motivation & the ability to work alone and unsupervised.
A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
A willingness to travel to site visits and hold a full UK driving licence
Experience of - or an interest in - historic buildings.
Willingness to work flexibly as required.
