Job Overview
A full‑time permanent Consultant position in the Cellular Pathology Department at Royal Preston Hospital. Working Monday‑Friday 9am‑5pm with no on‑call expectation. Responsibilities include providing a comprehensive histopathology service (excluding neuropathology cases) and developing specialist interests to complement existing Cancer services.
Main Duties
* Recruitment and appointment of junior medical staff, BMSs and secretarial staff for the histopathology department.
* Arrange rosters, allocate duties and instruct staff on organisational matters.
* Coordinate with staff in other disciplines and external health care workers.
* Attend Board meetings and committees concerning pathology issues and participate in resource management.
* Manage the service in your charge in agreement with other consultants, delegating responsibilities as appropriate.
Qualifications
* Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC); or eligibility for registration within six months of interview.
* MBChB or equivalent, or evidence of equivalent qualifications.
* FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
* UK‑trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award by interview date.
* Non‑UK‑trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to UK CCT/CESR.
* Evidence of academic excellence in Pathology.
Experience & Skills
* Extensive experience in Histopathology and Non‑Gynae Cytology.
* Interest in Dermatopathology, Oral/Head and Neck pathology.
Management
* Evidence of clinical leadership.
* Committed to audit and improvement of clinical practice and service development.
* Completion of a management course or certificate.
Research and Development
* Active interest in research and publications.
* Experience in developing new diagnostic services.
Personal
* Effective written and oral communication skills.
* Strong organisational abilities.
* Works well in multidisciplinary teams.
* Resident within 30 minutes travel time to Preston.
* Car owner/driver.
Health
* Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/Good Medical Practice.
