Job summary

Applications are invited for a Trust Doctor (eqv to ST1-3) in Neonatal Medicine (Senior House Officer) level to start in March 2026.

The post is based in the large tertiary medico‑surgical neonatal unit at the Royal London Hospital. It comes with an active academic programme and opportunities to participate in high‑quality audit and quality improvement projects. Clinical Fellows have the same opportunities to participate in the educational programmes, training and teaching undertaken by the Deanery approved specialist training doctors. The work schedule is a full shift system subject to regular compliance monitoring.

Eligibility for GMC registration with licence to practice is essential and prior experience in neonatal medicine is desirable. Applications are welcome from those who require GMC sponsorship via the RCPCH MTI scheme.

Further information can be obtained from Dr Lucy Fullerton, Consultant Neonatologist, email: lucy.fullerton@nhs.net.

Please be advised that the vacancy advertisement may close early if a sufficient number of applications are received therefore, we recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Main duties of the job

The obstetric service undertakes >5000 deliveries per annum. Most births are to families resident in Tower Hamlets, an area with a high level of socio‑economic deprivation and a rising birth rate.

There is a high incidence of consanguinity with resultant congenital anomalies, and gestational diabetes is a cause of significant neonatal morbidity. The Trust has a large adult renal unit that attracts tertiary antenatal referrals, and with the provision of neonatal surgery, there is an increasing number of referrals with congenital surgical anomalies.

The obstetric unit is well supported by six consultant obstetric anaesthetists and is achieving 98 hours of resident consultant cover per week. A weekly joint perinatal and monthly mortality meeting assists effective inter‑departmental communication and is of great educational value. The neonatal unit runs at high occupancy levels, and there is a high level of direct consultant‑delivered care and supervision.
