Road Safety Outside Schools Engineer, Surrey County Council. This full-time, permanent role is based at Victoria Gate, Woking, with hybrid working (remote and up to two days in the office).
About The Team
You will be part of the Safety Engineering Team, working closely with the Safer Travel Team to ensure infrastructure improvements align with school travel plans and road safety education. The teams sit within the Road Safety and Sustainable School Travel Team, whose mission is to reduce road casualties and promote active travel to school.

* Collaboration with Surrey Police on traffic law enforcement (including safety cameras)
* Education, training, and promotional campaigns to improve pedestrian and cycling skills and encourage alternatives to car travel
About The Role
The role addresses road safety concerns outside schools. Surrey County Council has allocated a £2.5 million budget over five years to support Road Safety Outside Schools schemes. You will assist the Senior Engineer in identifying, developing, and managing highway schemes recommended in RSOS reports, including improved crossing facilities, traffic calming, cycle facilities, point closures, School Streets, and other initiatives.
You may present formal reports to Members for approval and will engage with residents and elected Members. Stakeholder engagement and consultation are key parts of the role.
You may also support other tasks within the road safety engineering team, including:
* Promotion and installation of Speed Management 20mph Schemes
* Collision hotspot analysis and investigation
* Management of vehicle activated signs and school flashing wigwag assets
* Close collaboration with Surrey Police and other Highways and Transport colleagues
Responsibilities
* Identify, develop, and implement highway improvement schemes
* Assist in delivering RSOS reports through to implementation
* Present to Members for approval when required
* Engage with residents, communities, and stakeholders to address concerns
* Support related road safety, highways and road user education activities
Shortlisting Criteria
We are looking for candidates with experience in traffic or road safety engineering and/or public engagement. To be shortlisted for an interview, your application should demonstrate:
* Experience in identifying, developing, and implementing highway improvement schemes
* Understanding of traffic management, road safety principles, practices, and procedures
* Ability to visit sites across Surrey, including evening meetings
* Experience in road safety, highway design, or engagement with the public for scheme delivery
* Effective communication with internal and external teams and ability to work to tight deadlines
* Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for site visits (evenings possible)
