Are you keen to develop your leadership and managerial skills within Cardiology and ensure our patients receive the highest standards of care? If so, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Permanent Cardiac Catheter Lab Nurse Manager role within the Catheter Labs at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the Catheter Lab nursing staff and leading on designated projects, e.g., CareCube, within the Catheter Lab setting. They will work closely with other disciplines, including the Cardiology Consultants and Ward Leaders, to ensure the continued development of the Catheter Lab service and will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, whilst being dynamic and motivated.

The post holder will be responsible for managing the Catheter Lab resources, demonstrating an understanding of the need for good financial management and will observe relevant data, e.g., nursing metrics, and ensure development in order to continually enhance patient care and experience.

Significant experience at a Band 6/7 level is required to undertake this role as are proven leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

The Cardiac Catheter Lab Nurse Manager will lead and work as part of the Department team, providing professional and nursing leadership and management within the work environment.

The post holder will be accountable and responsible for the standards of nursing care provided and patient safety within the department.

The post holder will also oversee department stock levels. They will lead, assist, support and implement innovative practice and work with Senior Nurses and Directorate Managers/Leads to implement service plans.

The post holder will provide direct patient care demonstrating specialist knowledge and act as a resource and role model for the clinical team. The post holder will undertake the on call role twice a month.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication

·To act as a role model by demonstrating excellent communication and listening skills with patients, relatives and staff

·Act as the key person in the coordination and communication of complex, sensitive, emotional, condition related issues to patients, relatives and to the multi-disciplinary team

·To ensure that confidentiality for patients and staff is maintained

·To ensure good communication lines and flows are in place within the nursing structure and other disciplines across the Trust

·To lead on the dissemination of information across the team

·To ensure that there are high standards of documentation and care planning in all areas of practice and that documentation standards are consistent across all areas.

·Ensure that there are systems in place to capture feedback from patients/carers/ relatives.

Risk Management

·To ensure complaints, clinical incidents and near misses within the sphere of responsibility are managed and investigated in a timely manner

·To undertake risk assessments and implement risk reducing procedures, reporting to the line manager where risks are unacceptable and not within their ability to rectify.

·To mitigate patients’ safety risks and prevent avoidable harm to patients, and participates in Divisional risk processes management

·Manages the investigation of all clinical incidents ensuring learning occurs across the team to prevent future occurrences and documents learning

·Escalates and manages patient safety issues effectively to ensure investigation and learning is robust and shared widely

·Responsible for delivery of nursing actions in any incident/SUI action plans

·Ensure equipment is regularly maintained and serviced in line with hospital policy and manufacturer’s recommendations.

·To undertake formal investigations reporting back within the agreed time limits and ensuring lessons are learnt,

·To have responsibility for risk management and health and safety in the workplace within scope of responsibility.

·Work with the Infection Control team and the facilities team to ensure that infection control procedures and cleanliness are observed in the Cardiac Catheter Lab

·Minimum Safety Standards audit daily, Infection Control audit weekly. Hand hygiene monthly

·Ensure the clinical environments reflect a high standard of cleanliness, be proactive in response to any issues raised in cleaning audits or patient environment inspections

Service Delivery and Improvement

·Facilitate the work of the Trust Patient First and Clinical Governance initiatives linked to cardiology

·Takes responsibility for the management of the team within the Cardiac Catheter Lab, being flexible to staff and service needs, to ensure smooth day to day running of the service

·Is responsible for the ward/clinical area pay and non-pay budget out of budget costs pressures will require corrective plan of action in consultation with line Matron and finance managers

·Competently forecasts and communicates budget challenges

·Be responsible for the ordering and payment of consignment stock items,

·To provide a quality and cost effective service in accordance with Trust policy and procedures.

·Is responsible for undertaking establishment reviews of their clinical area including report writing and recommendations

·To develop a positive team culture and manage recruitment and retention of the workforce.

·Recruits nursing staff with appropriate skills and commitment to compassionate care

·Is responsible for ensuring that monthly rosters are managed via Healthroster and follows best practice protocol, adhering to policy, and deliver the staffing plan within Trust KPI’s

·To manage off-duty and annual leave to ensure service requirements are met in accordance with Human resource objectives and workforce development plans

·Ensure flexibility and staff rotation, as skill mix and competencies allows, in providing an on-call service

·Monitor key performance indicators, identify trends and take action to maintain levels of acceptable performance.

·Engages in staff experience questionnaires and works with the team to ensure that teamwork and the working environment are conducive to supporting excellent patient care

·Provides open forums for staff to support communication and team development/coherence

·To ensure dissemination and implementation of Trust policy and procedures.

·To lead in the communication of research developments to all colleagues, ensuring the findings are incorporated into clinical practice where appropriate.

·To lead and actively participate in audit activity relevant to the clinical area and develop and implement action plans.

People Management and Development

·To be responsible for Cath Lab nursing staff, housekeepers and Stock Controller.

·Is responsible for all aspects of staff performance including sickness/ absence and capability.

·Is responsible for appraising all nursing and health care staff annually, including Stock Controller, undertaking a six monthly review, and ensuring that staff have the necessary skills to deliver their role

·Creates a positive learning environment and culture across their clinical area

·Be able to demonstrate a high degree of motivation and innovation.

·Maximizes individual’s skills and expertise to ensure individual and team development

·Empowers and facilitates others to learn with a view to succession planning

·Critically analyses research related to nursing practice, facilitates educational activity on ward/department.

·In conjunction with the Cardiology Practice Educator is responsible for meeting the educational /training needs of the nursing team

·To monitor and manage clinical workload to ensure the effective deployment of staff, taking all possible action to minimise risk

·In conjunction with the Cardiology Practice Educator be responsible for the teaching, development and supervision of all staff and learners allocated to the area.

·To ensure the appropriate supervision of junior staff and to take responsibility for the induction of new staff.

·To educate and advise patients and carers and to promote positive health education.

·Ensure all Cardiac Catheter Lab nursing staff and department housekeeper attend mandatory training courses annually

·Maintains accurate local training records

Patient Care Delivery

·Ensure practice is in accordance with the NMC code of Professional conduct and work within limits of competence.

·To maintain high standards of care by personal example and conduct and be a credible practitioner in the area.

·Participate in the daily personal care of patients ensuring privacy and dignity at all times

·Ensure that accurate records are kept of all care given in the Department.

·Takes the lead role in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualised, evidence based patient care including the monitoring of care standards through audit and other activities.

·Effectively and professionally deals with emergency situations and debriefs staff where appropriate, ensuring support is available.

·To establish and promote a safe, clean, therapeutic environment for patients, visitors and colleagues.

·To be competent in clinical skills including enhanced practice relevant to the Cath Lab.

·To be accountable for the standards of nursing practice within the department and for ensuring staff work to those standards.

·To initiate, develop and implement effective methods of care delivery, which may include new ways of working and new roles.

Learning and Development

·The post holder will continue personal professional development to maintain their professional Nursing & Midwifery registration. Undertake 3 yearly Revalidation

·Maintain own personal and professional growth, keeping up to date with changes, new ways of working and future developments.

·Attend mandatory and statutory training as required.

·Attend relevant education, training and study days as required

·Ensure own practice is up to date and evidence based. Demonstrate knowledge of current, relevant research and professional issues.

·To undertake further post registration training and courses of study relevant to the clinical area.

·Develop an insight into operational management, corporate issues and Trust wide practices

1. A minimum of 3 years or more Cardiology/ Cath Lab experience and Band 6 (5)
2. NMC registration (5)
3. Experience at a Band 7 level 6 months or more
4. Relevant post graduation qualification or working towards. Preferably degree level
