Mechanical Technician – The University of Sheffield
We are looking for a hands‑on Mechanical Technician to join our Engineering & Maintenance team and help keep the University of Sheffield campus safe, operational and compliant. The role involves diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs, and maintaining critical systems such as HVAC, plumbing and plant equipment that support thousands of staff and students.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Carry out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance across campus through testing, fault finding and repair on a range of services, installations, plant, appliances and systems, completing jobs safely, on time and in compliance with University policies, technical legislation and health & safety standards.
* Prioritise work in order of urgency, using knowledge, skills and experience.
* Perform maintenance on central heating, cold water, gas services, domestic hot water, low‑pressure cold water, steam, compressed air and other mechanical systems.
* Liaise with contractors and key contacts within University departments to ensure work is carried out within required timescales and safety standards, and to keep them informed of progress.
* Maintain and report on stock levels of consumables; maintain personal tools, equipment and vehicles, performing regular checks.
* Record details on job sheets using the Planon database and assist supervisors with future work planning.
* Make decisions on maintenance faults, considering SLAs, health & safety, materials, time and cost.
* Provide technical advice and support to the team; respond to requests for assistance outside normal working hours and participate in an on‑call rota if required.
* Carry out other duties as required, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Person Specification and Criteria
Essential
* NVQ in mechanical engineering or equivalent (e.g. City & Guilds Level 3 or equivalent).
* Comprehensive working knowledge of current health & safety legislation.
* Knowledge of heating, ventilation, gas, hot and cold water installations and products for maintaining them.
* Technical professional registration or willingness to work toward it.
* Willingness to work out of hours and participate in the on‑call rota.
* Ability to prioritise work, make decisions effectively and appreciate long‑term implications.
* Flexible and positive approach to work.
* Professional communication with people at all levels of the organisation.
* Excellent organisational and time‑management skills.
* Full current driving licence.
Desirable
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.

* Salary: £32,080 – £36,636 per annum
