Semi- Senior Accountant
Location: Bolton
Salary: £27,000 - £30,000
Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:30am – 5:00pm (35 hours per week, ½ hour lunch)
Team: Small team of 4-5
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and proactive Accountant to join our growing practice in Bolton. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with practice experience to work with a variety of clients, including sole traders, partnerships, charities, CICs, and limited companies. The role involves preparation of accounts, tax compliance, client support, and contributing to the ongoing development of the practice.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Bookkeeping
Prepare year-end accounts for sole traders, partnerships, CICs, charities, and limited companies.
Complete bookkeeping and management accounts using Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, and Free Agent.
Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and control accounts.
Prepare and submit VAT returns accurately and on time.
Support clients with day-to-day accounting queries and software issues.
Maintain and update accounting records in line with regulatory and practice standards.
Assist in implementing and maintaining accounting software integrations and automation.
Tax Compliance
Prepare and submit corporation tax, self-assessment, and partnership tax returns.
Liaise with HMRC on behalf of clients as required.
Identify potential tax-saving opportunities while ensuring compliance with current legislation.
Client Communication & Administration
Draft professional correspondence, including cover letters and client summaries.
Prepare and send client communications via email, ensuring clarity and compliance with practice standards.
Provide routine advice to clients regarding accounting processes, deadlines, and general tax or compliance matters.
Maintain organised client files, correspondence logs, and CRM records.
Ensure all statutory filing obligations are met.
Practice Support & Development
Collaborate with colleagues to streamline internal processes and improve efficiency.
Keep up to date with changes in accounting standards, tax law, and software features.
Undertake ad-hoc administrative and financial tasks to support smooth running of the practice.
Required Skills & Experience
AAT Level 4 qualified (or equivalent), will consider AAT level 3 working towards AAT Level 4
Previous experience in preparing financial statements and tax returns (training provided where necessary).
Strong working knowledge of Xero (certification desirable).
Good understanding of UK accounting principles, VAT, and payroll processes.
Confident preparing accounts to trial balance and producing management reports.
Excellent accuracy, organisational skills, and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills – able to explain financial matters clearly to non-finance colleagues.
Proactive, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently.
Previous experience working in practice is essential.
